Can a "passive alert" psd (lab or golden retriever) have training in both drug and gun detection? As an experienced school resource officer (soon-to-be K-9 handler), I will use the psd exclusively in our schools for book bags, locker and vehicle parking lot inspections (no student inspections).
Also can the psd have a "sit" alert on drugs and a different alert (i.e. "lay down") for guns/ gunpowder? Or do I only want one alert for either contraband? The trainer (Bubba Howell, South Mississippi K-9) my dept. will use is a former police K-9 officer and has placed psd with numerous agencies in Ms. & La. He said having a drug and gun detector dog is workable, but with different alerts, more training on the handler. The overall selling point for my dept. and school system is both the drug and gun detection. Conversely it will be a hard sell for just a single purpose detection K-9.
I think this was asked awhile back in the K9 detection section and the answer was no. I still cant figure out this damn search function yet. It goes every BUT where I want to go.
so its not a good idea to have a psd trained to detect both scents..is it because of the unknown danger associated with gunpowder (i.e. a home-made bomb in a school locker)?..or is it an unreliable k-9 alert because it is unknown whether it is drugs or a gun detection?..i am on a fact finding mission so i don't look like a fool to my rank..any and all help is appreciated..
