Hello everyone. This is my first message. Glad to have found this site. I have been following Leerburgs new obedience video suggestions and my two GS are responding!. My question - do you use MArkers in all phases of training or just in the learning phase. Thanks
I use markers in all phases of my training and as long as the dog lives. Good behaviour will always get a 'yes'and a reward. I like to tell the dog always that he did good and I tell him always 'No' when I don't like what he is doing followed by a 'Yes' when he changes his behaviour. I'm very consistant in this. Black or White. There is no grey zone for the dog. If so, he will look what's best for him and that's not always best for me.
THere is no reason to ever quit using markers. In fact as the dog gains experience you can add a second marker called "NO!" Use the SEARCH feature of this web board (Under Rules of the board) there are a number of threads on markers.

I always use markers combined with a reward when teaching a behavior but phase out the marker and, eventually, the *treat* as they learn the behavior. I do, however, *reward* or mark on occasion, but use a tug, a pet, or a "good dog". Not all rewards have to be treats. A reward is anything motivating to the dog.
Some people ALWAYS use a treat with the marker and some use the marker and phase out the treat partially. I like to do this too, but only if I am proofing a behavior he already knows. That way I can mark him where I don't have a treat or reward and he will still get the point.
