If you have a dog who is already trained to stay in the yard via invisable fence. Will it be confusing to a dog to use an e-collar on him during Obdience work? Granted I would not probably try the Ob. work in the yard the fence is....Your thoughts?????
I know a trainer who uses the ecollar with the invisible fence collar to teach the dog that the invisible fence flags are the boundary, not the property/wire line - so he goes for a picnic and stakes the flags around the table - instant invisible fence!
Basically, I know of one guy that uses both collars together successfully, although it isn't for OB. Not much, but maybe a little help.

You'll probably find that you will have some trouble if you try and use low level stim with the dog. The problem is that he'll make an association with the new (low level) stim and the old (high level) stim that was used with the IF. You'll have some trouble finding what I call his "working level of stim" where he first feels it, because he'll overreact. He'll jump and vocalize just as he does with the high level stim of the IF. This makes it difficult to get any work done.
But it's just a matter of desensitization to the stim. Just keep pressing the button randomly until he realizes that it's not the same and then you'll be able to get to work. It make take a few days of this. I'd suggest that you don't try to do any basic work at home or wherever you have the IF set up or you'll just bounce the dog's head back and forth between the two stim levels. All you'll get is a dog that constantly tests the fence and doesn't learn any OB.
Lou Castle has been kicked off this board. He is an OLD SCHOOL DOG TRAINER with little to offer.

This is the problem I had with my dog when I tried to transition her onto the e-collar for basic OB stuff. Of course, the fact that she was already pretty much trained made things difficult, but I was never able to get her desensitized to the collar enough to be able to use it in the manner you do, Lou. I was able to use it 'your way' with my foster dog, and then train him to the fence, but because my dog was already trained to the fence, and 97% reliable in her obedience anyway, I had to just use the ecollar for corrections with her.
She still flinches when she hears something beep, like a watch, the alarm chime when a door is opened, or the microwave, even though she hasn't had the IF collar on for almost 2 years now. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

I'm just about to start using the e-collar after the 2 week conditioning period. Just curious for more opinions. I've searched the forums for more info but came up empty. Has Ed spoken on this topic at all?
I have the DVD already. I believe i've read just about every article ed has avaiable here. I agree the E collar DVD is VERY informative. If also am using the basic dog obedience DVD. I'm just looking for more opinions specifically related to traing in my yard that is surrounded by an ivisible fence.
LOL, I didn't get that from your post at all, Kurt -- but it seems like a couple other posters on this thread have already answered your question now <:-)
My dog was already trained to the i-fence for several months (6-7) before I introduced him to the e-collar. I use the e-collar in pretty much the same way I used the prong and I train in the yard all the time. Have not had any problems, but my dog stays well within the boundaries and doesn't test the fence, and it doesn't seem to be confusing him. I only put one collar at a time on him, so when we are training he gets the e-collar and when we're just going outside he gets the fence collar, even though he doesn't really need it anymore.
FYI, I am just a newbie trainer with a (rambunctious) companion dog, but wanted to share my experience with this.
