I purchased a kennel for my 7 month GSD, so when I am gone away from home for a short time I can leave him in the kennel until my return. It's big enough for him to turn around and lay down, but what is the best way to get a puppy used to staying in a kennel, or am I starting this too late?
You are not starting too late. Of course best to start when they are younger. Start by putting him in for a few minutes with a really yummy treat. Tell him "go in your kennel". Gradually add more time. He may complain while in there. Do not let him out if he is complaining- wait until he is quiet otherwise you are reinforcing the complaining. Give him a treat every time he goes to his kennel. Eventually he will want to go in when you tell him because he has associated the treat with the kennel. My girl goes in there sometimes just to get away. She wasn't exposed to a kennel until 4.5 months old. She did complain for about a week, but eventually she got over it. Oh, she did manage to get out once so I went to the hardware store and bought these metal clips for reinforcement. She hasn't had a problem since. Good luck.
