Hello to all -
I have used the SEARCH and read the archives - also read Ed's diet for puppies - but I'm still confused on the correct amount of supplements to feed my 13-week old pups (who are both on the raw diet). On each of the bottles/containers, the directions are to give 1-2 pills, 1/2-1 tsp., etc., daily. This is what they get:
1 Tbsp. of yogurt in AM
1 1000 mg. salmon oil gelcap in AM
1 400 mg vitamin E gelcap in AM
1 C-500 chewable tablet in AM
1 tsp. alfalfa/kelp in AM
1 Tbsp. of canned pumpkin in PM
Same supplements except for alfalfa/kelp in PM
1 children's chewable multi-vitamin in PM
Is this way too much? I appreciate any help or directions in finding help.

Jan - I think you are doing fine. One thing about feeding raw is that you dont have to do the same thing every day. There is nothing wroing with variety as long as the supliments are there and you are doing fine

Thanks for your help. I'm sorry to be an itch, but I am up against my vet with this diet, so I am almost paranoid about getting it right. "The imbalance of calcium and phosphates, etc., in the raw diet will cause a lot of problems for your puppies." I will continue to do my research and, hopefully, prove him wrong.

QUOTE: "The imbalance of calcium and phosphates, etc., in the raw diet will cause a lot of problems for your puppies." END
I've read quite a bit about the cacium/phosphorous ratio as applied to raw diets. The statements I've seen about the resulting imbalance were referring to all-meat diets, though; they weren't referring to a diet including bones and supplements, from what I understood. Is this how others understand that problem? That it relates to a diet of all muscle-and-organ meat? Does your vet understand that your own diet is not 100% muscle-and-organ meat?

Connie -
I gave my vet a brief run-down on what I feed them, but I had already lost his attention. I plan on faxing him a complete "menu" for his future reference (and perhaps my protection), although I am sure that since he can't get a kickback from beef hearts and chicken backs, he won't be interested. Sad to have to say that.

It is sad, but it's almost a fact of life -- so much so that my response of a few years ago ("another vet") is no longer what I say to that. But I like the plan of a fax with the complete dietary plan and a query: "Do you have any suggestions for additions?" I tend a little toward obsessive about canine health and nutrition, I realize, but that sounds to me like a good step and a good page for the dog's chart.

If your vet (who works for YOU) doesn't seem to want to pay attention, I think it's time for a new vet!!
I wouldn't put up with that for a second. Your dogs lives may count on his attention some day and if he can't pay attention to your concerns about your dogs' diet (whether he agrees or not) then I wouldn't spend my money keeping him in business.
This is my #1 complaint about vets... I feel very lucky to have FINALLY found one who respects my views on feeding and will actually read and further educate herself on this, even if she isn't 100% sure she agrees with it!

Yep, there are 'some' but the biggest hurdle our new puppy customers have with the raw diet is their vet. They take the pup to the vet for a checkup, the vet says the pup looks great, asks what they feed and when they answer RAW, a large number of the vets (our pup customers deal with) start telling them the horrors of this... your dog will get salmonella, impaction, perforated gut, bla bla bla...
I deal with this every time we send a new litter out the door...arg.

I take my 10 year old GSD to the vet and he raves about how good of health he is in, especially for a dog that is on the road at this age.
He asks what I'm feeding and then shakes his head when I tell him a raw diet.
He askes about salmonella and I tell him I don't feed rotten stuff and that I've never ever had a problem.
