I have a home that is 100% hard wood and tile, which equates to a puppy that slips and slides everywhere. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any good booties or products that would help prevent slipping when inside but that won't cause desensitization?
He's a 6 month old GSD (for those of you who don't know) - and I don't want to aggrevate the HD potential. Just for FYI, I'm not too worried about scratching up the floors, just making sure that he doesn't slip and slide too much.
If you have to buy something, you can get the wax they put on husky's feet. I have used it on really old dogs. it's O.K. but I haven't had a problem either.
They did studies on summer vs winter puppies and their rates of hip dysplasia. Winter puppies have a higher rate of CHD and the feeling is that they slip and slide more, letting the joints subluxate and causing microscopic tears in the cartilage. Once the joint gets in the "habit" of subluxating, it's easier for it to do it again and again. All that damages the hip joint leading to a higher risk of hip dysplasia.
At least that's the feeling. Slippery floors can do the same thing.
Well......my dog has actually smashed into the wall while chasing my cats, with his collar actually chipping the paint off the wall ( I have wooden floors ).
And I've seen old dogs struggle for traction on slippery floors in the past everytime that they'd try to get up, that wasn't a pretty sight.
Yes, and welcome to the wonderful world of panic/expectation/joy/morepanic of puppy ownership. I still do this even though I know it's silly.
