What's the growth pattern of Mal's? Is it similar to GSD's as in around 12 months the bones stop growing, and then they continue to fill out and add muscle mass until around 24-30 months?
Or do Mal's typically follow a different schedule of growth?
Also, what is the target range for weight of a typical working male Mal?
That is a hard question. Look at Mals in general and you see a few different body types. I would also like to point out that everyone around me notices my dogs growth but me. This is because I don't care. There is nothing that I can do about it, and I am to busy butchering my training to think about things that I cannot do anything about I have found that most dogs in the size range of Mals and Shepherds pretty much do as you have described. My dogs body shape is completely different from my buddy's dogs. I see a little bit of difference in the growth rates when my buddy points it out. He is like you and wants to wonder about the whole growth thing.
wow...didnt realize that they were so small...only 50 to 60 pounds..that's for a male correct..and people are using them for protection???...
And they do a great job. I prefer the smaller "versions" with a high power "engine". I know mals that are scraping to get to the 50 pound mark but when they attack the decoy (190 pounds) + 35 pounds off suit are trown 1 or 2 metres backwards.
My female Mal will be about 60lb full grown, both the sire and his litter mate are 90lb dogs. I think some lines tend to run larger and the french/ french ring dogs are smaller types.
50 or 60 pounds at 35-40 miles per hour. When you see some of these rockets compared to the slow lumbering bigger dogs it is definately an OH SH Moment. We have several at our club, but only one doing upper body. He 70% of the time hurts me due to that unbelievable speed. Not to mention that he pinches the crap out of me no matter how hard I try to get out of the way. He is aptly named though, his name is Revv.
I don't like the bigger Mals, and hate even more people breeding them, they are not GSDs.. As the Mal has become more popular the "size" people are getting in on it. Before we know it the Mal will be a structural mess because people want BIG! (this is not aimed at anyone.. just a general vent LOL!)
In reply to David.. over the years we have had many different breeds come out to our club to train. Huge GSDs, APBTs, ABs, Bandogs/Mastiffs.. the two dogs who CONSISTANLY leave huge pot hole bruises on our decoys through the suit and through the wrap are my male Mal, who hovers just under 60lb and his brother who is about 5 lbs heavier. In addition, they are always the ones that knock the decoys down.
I think you have to own and work a good Mal to really appreciate what these little guys are made of.
