I just took my GSD pup for a check up and he has developed an over bite. He didn't have one at the last check up (about one month ago). He is teething. Is this typical is during the growth of GSD'd or is it something I should be worried about?
How old is he now? What did his bite look like at 8 weeks, particularly the occlusion (the position of the molars, which should look somewhat like pinking sheers)?
The top jaw and bottom jaw do grow at different rates, and it is very common to see an overshot bite correct itself over time (more common than an undershot bite correcting itself).
Have you asked the dog's breeder what is typical in the line?
My GSD had the same thing, just when the permanant teeth were coming in. Just happened to coincide with a vet visit and she alerted me. I could see how the lower canines looked like they weren't naturally going to be in position.
I went a week later to a doggy dentist/specialist and when the vet opened my pups mouth, she stated, 'oh, this isn't too bad'. And when I looked, the week that had passed and further growth of the teeth, had slid them into the proper place. The vet said that she'd seen this before in working line GSD's from Germany (K-9's in her area). That they have a bit of an overbite that USUALLY corrects itself.
She recommended I push on the lower canines for a few minutes every day, in the same direction to assure they fit in place with the upper. And come back if there is a problem.
