I would like to train cadaver dogs, and become a trainer where is the best place to go in the US with my dog. there are no training schools re same in ireland. I hope someone can give me an adress
Go ahead and buy THe Cadaver Dog Handbook -- they do recommend psuedoscent in addition to more traditional training aids, which is controversial to many but it is a pretty comprehensive book. The book comes with the course offered by the authors so don't buy it if you go to one of their seminars. They do not offer a lot of them these days.
There is also an OPEN board on yahoo groups called k9forensics. It is a large group and there may be folks there who can help you.
thanks nancy and ed, i shall certainly follow up those recommendations. ed if you ever decide to bring out a cadaverdog training video or dvd, i,ll be your first customer.
thanks marcel
From what I understand, it is not significantly different than training a drug or bomb dog ....but those here who have done that can speak to that. I think Ed has a lot on that.
Most people want a passive alert for obvious reasons and it is a bit harder to train passive than active alert.
I dont think its harder to train a passive alert than an agresive alert. Some times its easier to train a passive.Sometimes it takes alot of work to build a good agressive indication.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
Thanks David. You could have been disagreeing with the part of the post that said that training for cadaver was similar to training for drugs or bombs. It's similar and of course, there are differences. The detection part is very much the same, but the desired alert may be different. Cadaver has many stages of decomposition, each with a different odor.
I agree that either alert can be easy or difficult depending on the dog and the trainer.
Lou Castle has been kicked off this board. He is an OLD SCHOOL DOG TRAINER with little to offer.
