I try to keep up on the breed bans and any incidents that could be cause for the media to make things worse for us dog owners. A friend of the family has two grandkids, I believe they are 2 and 4. The kids have always been around the neighbor's dogs and never had any incidents previously. When the kids went over to the neighbors to see the dogs, the male dog attacked one of the kids. The dog bit the boy in the face, grabbing him by the cheeks. The child has lost several teeth, has over 200 stitches, and will be facing plastic surgery to try and repair the damage. The nerves in his face were also damaged. The bitch had come into heat, and I guess the male dog was not too happy with the kids getting near her. The problem is.. these dogs were not "pit bulls". They were Golden Retrievers. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
It'd be nice if the proponents of these kinds of things could spend some time with the Ed Frawley's and Cesar Millan's of the world, but it ain't gonna happen. It'd interfere too much with the political posturing they love to do, e.g., some of the quoted comments in that article, plus what we've all seen on the news for the last week.
Things like this don't happen out of the blue - the owners either missed or ignored the warning signs and there ARE ALWAYS signs before an attack happens - ALWAYS !!!!! I have been collecting emails from people on dog bites - many of these make my blood boil. I plan on publishing them.
I hate to disillusion everyone, but once in a while this stuff just does sometimes happen. 98% of is stupidity, true. We have a police officers' dog in his back yard, bites his niece in the face. I doubt this guy was sloppy, or stupid. Nor was his dog. Once in awhile sh__ just happens.
Can you imagine what this has done to him and K9 efforts in Portland, Oregon?
Sorry, but this board is so judgemental. Instead of resting on your laurels and slamming people, try to help. You don't know the true circumstances, and papers don't print them. Once in awhile, try to remember if you've ever had any close calls. I have. Nobody is perfect.
A pet owner that does not train and has golden retrievers and their dog bites a kid is ignorant of responsible dog ownership. But a person that has and trains working dogs cant afford even a "close call".There is a big difference. The first is stupidity and the latter is irresponsible. If you have a working dog and then say "oh well!close calls happen!" then you dont need that kind of dog.A good handler/trainer knows that a close call or bad bite is possible but wont allow either to happen.Thats like almost shooting your hunting buddy in the woods by accident and then saying "oh well!It was bound to happen sometime!".Sheeeeez.
