OK you guys...what do you use for training treats for teeny tiny pups? I have trained dozens of puppies but they have all been large breeds and a baggie full of hot dogs didn't make a dent in their appetite or give them the runs.
Some of you know we have a Corgi...and I had been talking about getting another one next year as Morgan is hitting middle age (she's just about 7) I love the attitude of these little dogs!
Anyway, enter Phoebe !! A birthday present from Ed last week.
OMG..the drive and confidence that this pup has is unbelievable but she is mucho dinky. Maybe 3 pounds or so. I think I am going to try my luck at agility training and have started foundation stuff with her and she is great! But what to use for treats that doesn't make her sick!? I have been using string cheese cut up very small but it sticks all together in my bait bag and sticks to my fingers after it warms up.
I also have a Mal that is in agility training who is ultra sensitive to so many foods, I could use some ideas for her too...
Thanks for any ideas you all can pass on. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
If you're not worried about the corn or sugar, Cheerios make super training treats for smaller dogs. They're clean and easy for us humans to handle and dogs just seem to love them. They don't seem to fill up on them either. You can break them in half for the tiny dogs if you have the inclination.
My 3 year old Malinois has a very sensitive tummy. I haven't really found anything to use for her that does not cause the runs. She's allergic to corn, so no Cheerios for her. I just switch her over to play whenever I can to keep the tummy upset to a minimum. I would love any ideas for her should anyone have some!!
Gerber also makes toddler snacks that are small and dissolve really quickly in the dog's mouth. Some is dehydrated fruit (sold in resealable packets) and some are teeny tiny little...ummm, crackers, for lack of a better word, although they are even smaller and softer than cheerios. Look in the baby food/toddler section of the grocery store.
Natural Balance rolls are great for training dogs of any size. I can cut them to whatever size I want. They do get crumbly, but that is my only complaint.
I used Charlie Bears treats for my pup. I train with a gal with Papillions and Pugs. The Charlie Bears are VERY bland, low-fat and never seem to get anyone's tummy upset, also the dogs love them.
How about the freeze dried liver treats? You can break them into smaller pieces and they not troublesome to carry. And natural, as I am fussy about unecessary additives.
BTW: Happy Birthday! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> And Phoebe is way cute! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
I'd also give a hearty recommendation for Charlie Bears, they've worked great for me.
And Cindy, I can't wait to get your new girl on the sleeve at the next seminar.
Of course........I'll have to be kneeling for her to reach the sleeve...hehe! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
