I read somewhere in a Leerburg Q&A that Ed said if a dog is digging that it means the dog is bored. Today I went to Wekiwa Springs State Park to mountain bike on the horse trails, Cujo was panting and my legs hurt so I stopped for a drink break - I stopped for maybe 15 seconds before he started digging a hole in the ground.... does this mean he's bored of us taking a break and wants to continue walking? However amusing it is to me to see my dog dig holes, im sure other cyclists don't appreciate him making potholes in the trail lol.
It means the dog is smarter than you - he was hot and he knew that digging a hole and laying in it would cool him down. Try it someday - you may be surprised at how good it feels.
I was thinking that might be it too - but he didn't lay down in the hole, he just stared at it, walked around it, then dug some more - so maybe he hasn't quite figured out what to do with the hole after he's dug it
You are funny. My dogs digs big holes on the grond all the time and then eats the root of the plants from the hole. Sometimes he sits on the hole and sometimes he sits next to them and if told to stops, he stares at you.
I think my pup likes it and digs holes and not always out of boredom.

I would up the structured exercise since he's doing it a lot. Tired, well-exercised dogs are happy and not bored and not looking for mischief!
I know you said in another post that you didn't have a fenced in yard. Just a tip from someone who does and likes it to look half decent despite my 3 GSD's Whenever you see him digging let him know that it is NOT ok!!! I have corrected my dogs early on and I have never had a problem with digging. Just a thought.....
Mike,
Were you the one who had asked about "how much exercise is too much"? The digging *may* be an indication that you are going too hard to fast. Not saying it *is*, but sometimes digging can be a stress-relieving behavior.
Just something you may want to keep your eye on.

Here's a thought from someone who has owned terriers for the last 30 yrs. Some dogs just like to dig.
Ditto that from the husky front! On the plus side everyones toenails are very trim....you just have to get used to the grenade range appearance of the dog yard!
