well, iam not so much experienced ....as i dont have much experience with dogs so here are sum issues i want to discuss with you guys...it might be long but plz read it to give me a good suggestion.
my puppy is 9 weeks old a LAB/COCKER spaniel mix but his dominant breed is lab and i love him....here are sum problems iam facing with him.
1. he run and chase my kids (he doesnt do that with me) and try to bite and nip their pants and once he cathes them he try to nip their pants with growling and then saying "NO" to him will only cause him to nip and bite more and more...but if i come to scruff and shake him and saying no,he only respond me with aggression like growling..but when i shake his neck strongly he starts to yelp and when i leave him he sees me and comes to snap at me and bark at me..like he is showing purely aggression towards me and sounds like he saying me "WHY THE HELL DID U DO THAT?".
2. he is very intelligent and i trained him to SIT and when i give the command of sit he sits and watches at me like if he will get the treat now...so whenever i feed him i say him to sit...but if iam standing infronf of him with food bowl he watches me untill i give him food...but if i dont give him food and pretend like iam eating his food he start to bark at me loudly..i dont give him bone..but sumtimes if he find the bone and if i try to take it away from him he barks at me and snap at me,i used to take the bone away from him few days back and he never said me anything...its been few days now if he gets the bone he tries to hide himself and eat the bone bcoz he knows i will come and take the bone away from him...he simple barks at me and try his best not to give me the bone....so dont u think its the sign of dominant and alpha..what would u suggest????
3. when i take out of his crate and feed him..he starts to play..but if anyone try to hold him to get in his crate back he doesnt let anyone do that as if sum1 hold him he growls and try to bite....sumtimes only sumtimes he play hide and seek with me ..but he hides after nipping my pants and sounds like saying me to catch him....but rest of the time i hide and he comes to find me.....wat would u suggest..is it normal or another dominant behaviour????
while holding him, scruff shaking him, saying NO to him, taking bone away from him he just behaves aggressively......rest of his behaviour is ok and very pretty and intelligent and normal and i know he loves me bcoz he licks my feet whenever i take out him from his crate and during feeding time.
plz give me some expert advices on it and i will be very thankfull to u.
I would say that you have a normal high energy dog with a strong attitude. If you can not keep up with him and be a strong and fair leader his behavior will get worse and you will have a big problem. Check the posts and articles about dominant dog issues. Read about obedience training.Maybe some videos will help you. You will learn a lot. Take this issue serious. Good luck.
I cant give you expert advice like you asked for, but I can tell you I thought my female puppy was aggressive too. If I tried to put pants on, shed fly through the air to grab the bottoms. My boyfriend was going crazy with her doing it to him every morning. And if you had socks on, forget it.
We told her no and redirected her to a toy everytime. Which she took for a few seconds. Honestly, I think the reason she doesnt do it anymore is that she simply outgrew it. Shes 6 months now.
My puppy never growled at me for the things you describe though.. she did ocassionally growl and nip if I shook my finger in her face if she chased the cat, but as time went on and she realized she wasnt pack leader, she lays down now if I catch her doing something she shouldnt be doing.
Course, I dont shake my finger in her face anymore, either.. mostly cause I figure it just adds insult to injury for a dog thats already having to 'submit'..
Good luck with your puppy. In a few months, it will be alot better. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
1. When your kids run, your dog falls in to prey drive. This is why he tries to catch their pants or legs. Instead of running, give your kids a rolled up towel or a ball on a string that moves short quick jerks. He should tempted more by the towel than by your kids legs. I have a 5 year old boy and he knows that he has to comply to this method of play if he wants to play with my dog. No running away with sreams to end up on the sofa so the dog can't catch him.
2. At nine months, if your pup is growling at you after a correction, that probably means your corrections isn't hard enough for the dog. He sees this as rough play. You should read Ed's article Teaching your puppy the meaning of the word NO
3. The problem with the crate, try using treats. My pup is 9 weeks also and I never PUT him in the crate. He goes in by himself. I use the commande IN YOUR CRATE and when he's in, I give him a treat. I practice this command in our working sessions even thought I won't close the door (at first don't close the door when you practice this). I give him a treat and then the release commande OK to tell him it's ok to come out. If he doesn't want to go in, put the treat right beside his nose so he can sniff it. When you have his attention, take the treat (still holding it) in the crate. When all four legs are in the crate, give the treat. Practice several times. By doing this, you should see your dog (gradually, it takes a couple of days to sink in) bolting in the crate waiting for his treat. Always give a treat when he goes in his crate on his own. I sometimes give a treat when the door is closed to (it's important that when you do this he is not whining).
Since I'm not a professional on the matter, I've read a lot on this site and watched a couple of Ed's DVDs and this is what I've been doing with my dog for about two weeks now. And it works! I think patience and consistency is the key.
