Are the fur saver collars easier on a dog's trachea than an ordinary choke collar? They 'look' more humane, but I couldn't find any discussions on them.
The only place that I've seen them used (myself) is on our local schH field. Is this where they are most common? Or am I not very observant ?
Fur savers work under the same principle as a regular check chain (choker). Besides the added benefit of not pulling out as much fur (thus the name)..it seems to have more of an audible effect in that it makes a different sound when used.
The only thing fur savers are good for is grabbing onto. You can’t produce a good correction with a fur saver, the links are just too big and don’t pull through smoothly. If you are worried about trachea damage use a pinch collar.
Matt I will have to disagree with you in the fact that you can not get a good correction from a fur saver. If used correctly you can get the same correction from a fur saver then you can with a choke. IMO the fur saver if alitte more user friendly meaning it won't damage as much fur as a choke and you can easily "choke" up on it if needed. Saying this I mean you can opt to use a link instead of the live ring for a tighter fit and a better correction. In the Military we called this a cheater ring. You can move the chain up to the base of the dogs head and click your leash to a link making the chain tighter creating a firmer correction.

I am gonna have to side with Matt on this one. Both my dogs wear fur saver collars only because I like the looks of them. I found that using these collars for a correction is a mistake. For example, when a correction is given the links do not pull through smoothly and will not easyly release after the correction is given. I found myself reaching down to release the links from one another. So in conclusion, I found that using a prong collar works best for my animals.
Please use them for looks only. I have had them in the past and hooked the dog up to the live ring without thinking. I have choked the everluvin crap out of a couple of dogs this way. It is also not easy to get undone most of the time.
One of my MWD friends showed me the cheater ring setup...it works great but not the same principal as the choker. My question is....are the German mfg chokers with the big links the same as a fur saver? I know they are fairly expensive. I have somehow managed to lose two of em.
IT is the same thing. The bigger links don't grab the fur like the smaller linked chokers do. I have never had the problems that the others have had. IT could be for a number of reasons but I have never had any problems. I always get smooth corrections with my Fur savers.
