right now I am trying to train my 8 month GSD to come on command. I train him while he is on the lead with the choke collar, I have him sit and stay, then I use the command for come and give the lead a tug and he comes straight to me, my question is, my lead is only about three feet long, should I get alonger lead for this and does anybody have any input as far as how I am trainin this command?
I use my 6 ft. lead to begin then progress to my 30 footer that I bought from Ed. gradually increase the distance and remember that you will need to repeat it again and again and again.
Good luck

Treat them like they are animals
Train them like they are animals
Love them like they are people
Before you really get into the choke and leash pulling, try this...
Every time you feed your dog, have someone else hold him where you prepare the food, while you walk away to where you feed him. (If you prepare and feed in the same place, feed somewhere different). The dog will be lunging, trying to reach you, then you say a somewhat loud and fun "come", have the person holding the dog wait one second and then let go, and give your dog his food immediately he gets to you.
Do this at every meal time. You will soon condition your dog to move towards you fast when he hears the command.
The recall is the most important command, I think, and to begin with the dog must think that going to you is the best thing in the world.
A corollary is don't recall your dog to do anything unpleasant, such as scolding him, putting a leash on to stop his fun, stopping him from chewing on your things, etc.
