I had a rude awakening. I thought I was a pretty decent dog trainer. Not professional, but I thought I had a good understanding of dog behavior and in the past had good results with one specific type of dog.
I need to find a club to join or someone to mentor me. I'm not as smart as I thought I was. Go figure I am in Wingate. In another post I asked about books I could read but think I need to work with a real trainer, who can unbiasedly evaluate my dog, suggest the correct methods to use, tell me what. if *any* type of work my dog is capable of, if ANY besides being a pet/watchdog and pretty much just tolerate my new-found ignorance toward training. Wow, that hurt to admit that WHEW!!!
Thanks
Stacy

I think Chris Duhon is moving there in a few months. He is on this board and likes ASR.
As far as the rude awakening on being a dog trainer, I get one about everytime I train. I make a plan, the dog goes along, I screw up, the dog goes along....ect, ect.
There are many theorys in dog training that I have understood for years. Then I go out to put these theorys into use....oh boy.
I figure I have absolutely PERFECT timing every 5th day. I train for four days and say screw it on the 5th. PERFECT!
I am smarter than my dog, your just not. |

I will be there in February. I train and compete in ASR. There is a guy by the name of Todd who trains PSA and is about to create a Campagne club and also, looking at ASR. He lives about 30miles from you in Charlotte. I also was contacted by a lady who lives in Charlotte asking for other trainers, she has a FR III dog and is looking for some people to train with. So all in all theres about 5 people (possibly alot more) that are training in Charlotte. I will be in Fayetteville about 100miles from you. When I get there we could still hook up on weekends are whatever and train. shoot me an email at cjduhon@msn.com and I'll try to reply to you the email addresses of the trainers in that area. Theres also going to be a FR trial in Charlotte November 4th.

Stacy, I'm in Candler (which is just outside of Asheville) and I had the same problem you are having - seems like all the trainers and good clubs are further East. There aren't any over here in the mountains. I decided to go with the Catawba Valley SchH Club in Concord, which is a 1.5 hour drive from my house. Another member (or more?) on here is also a member and trains there. He's actually the person that recommended that club to me. The next closest place was in Winston-Salem and then out towards Raleigh at Tarheel Canine. The Catawba Valley SchH Club would be roughly 90 miles or so away from you. I have some pictures of training that I watched there in July, before actually joining, at the following link: July Schutzhund Training Pictures
My pup's dad is about 1/4 of the way down the page. Butan is his name. My pup's picture is on THIS PAGE. He's 5 months old (and that isn't me holding him) and I'm supposed to pick him up this weekend. He's gonna be a handful.

Yes! You have no idea how happy I am that there are people willing to help me out. To be honest I was surprised to get so many great replies. I really want to get serious about training, and be good at it.
Now I have mentioned before I have never competed in any form of obedience and now I really get to let my ignorance shine, yay Here goes:
I have no idea what the initials you each posted stand for. The only ones I am familiar with are the SCH which were not mentioned, and my S.B. more than likely hasn't got what it takes, especially with what I put the poor thing through with my "15 years of training"...I am cringing as I type this...I feel like a turd now
But hey, I am an eager learner and when "I" get in the right hands I respond very well to corrections. Feel free to shoot me an email kadesco@alltel.net .
Am I going to have to buy a GSD? Can a S.B. compete with the right trainer? I have never done any form of bite work, but it interests me. The extend of my bite work experience is playing tug with him and using the word "CUJO" to get him growling. Ok, before I embarass myself further and the offers for help are withdrawn...thank you.
Kristen, your pup is a beauty!
I'm here and listening,
Stacy

Well I recognized Dave Carson and Wayne. Who was on the end of the lead with the Rottie? Was that one of Sam McKenzie's dog's per chance?

Hmmmmm, Stacy, I see we have work to do on you. To help you make a more informed decision and the "right" decision, I would suggest waiting until you hook up with some of the trainers in Charlotte and see their Malinois work first before you dish out any money on a luxury cruise liner, for this kind of work I'd suggest a small 18Ft'er, with twin johnson 250 motors on back

I have been working with Richard Shook in Claremont (just outside of Hickory) after several recommendations from board members and have been pleased.

LOL Chris...Work?! You think a Mal is a handful, wait'll you try training me ...haha.
I've watched police training of Malinois in action, definitely not for the novice WHOA. Very impressive. I hoot and holler every time they hit their target. I saw one clip where the Mal jumped OVER the car and my jaw just dropped. I have high respect for those dogs and their trainers.
I certainly won't be buying any dog right away, I have bought enough dogs on impulse, and having small kids, I have to be very careful and will need a lot of help choosing the right one! For sure!!
