Ok I KNOW I'm going to want him to bark later on. I don't want to extinguish that at all, but I DO want him to learn not to bark and howl and whine and bark and bark and howl and whine when I put him in his crate. I mean it goes on for HOURS before he finally stops, so putting him in there and letting him out when he gets quiet doesn't work. Can I use a bark collar just for this? I don't care if he barks outside in his kennel, just when he's inside in his crate. I do want him to get used to staying in the crate sometimes, because when he gets a little older, he will be spending more and more time inside. I want him to be comfortable in there, not go crazy ballistic in it. And there again, would using a bark collar now mess up any low-stim remote collar training I might be doing with him in the future? I've never used a bark collar before, so I don't even know how strong they are or anything.

What I did with "Erika" was feed her about 7 pm. at 9ish I take her out in the back yard for some play time and a poop. At about 1030 or 1100 I put her in the crate with a milk bone and cover the front of the crate with a blanket andI sleep close to her on the couch. I fed her a few times in the crate. treated her in the crate, put her toys in the crate and just tried to make it an ok place to be. Do you have Ed's puppy Vids yet?

No I don't have Ed's puppy videos. I've crate trained a puppy before, and crate trained a couple of adult foster dogs as well, but none of them were like this. Today I tried putting him in there with a blanket over top, and with a chewie. As soon as the door closed all hell broke loose. I sat here at the computer for awhile, and not once did he stop barking and trying to get out, or even try to touch his chewie. I had planned on letting him out when he stopped (I anticipated maybe 15-20 minutes), but I swear to you he would only stop long enough to take a breath and then he was back at it again. I would start to praise him and turn around to open the door and before I could even get the "G" of "Good boy" out, he was going again. I left the room thinking maybe he wasn't stopping because I was sitting there, and he still kept on and on and on. He barked and howled and whined for at least a good 2.5 hours before he finally quit (of exhaustion I imagine) and I was able to let him out. I was warned of this behavior when I picked him up, so it isn't just due to being in a new environment. I didn't try to put him in there anymore today, and he's staying outside in his kennel again tonight, but I did encourage him to go back in a few times with treats, without closing the door and he had no problem with that.

Depends. How old is he? If he's less than 6 months, I'd recommend against it unless he's unusually mature. But sometimes it doesn't stop the noises OTB (Other than barking).
And there again, would using a bark collar now mess up any low-stim remote collar training I might be doing with him in the future? I've never used a bark collar before, so I don't even know how strong they are or anything.
It won't affect low stim training to any noticeable degree. As with regular low stim training, the dog picks his own stim level to stop barking. The lowest levels can't be felt by most dogs.

Hmm, well, he's 4 or 5 months old, so you're saying it wouldn't be a good idea right now to use it? I don't really know how to tell whether or not he's 'unusually mature'. He's still very much a puppy when it comes to his behaviors towards me, hubby, and other people. He licks your hands and arms when you pet him or whenever they're close enough for him to lick lol. He jumps all over everyone in exhuberance. I don't know how to tell his mental age, to be honest.
What do you mean by 'the noises OTB'?
I was looking at something like the Innotek BC-50. I'm sure I wouldn't need it for very long, so there's no need to spend $50 or more on one, right?

What do you mean by 'the noises OTB'?
OTB = Other Than Barking. Bark collars often don't stop screaming or whining. They're activated by the vibration of the dog's vocal cords during barking and the other noises usually don't activate them.
I was looking at something like the Innotek BC-50. I'm sure I wouldn't need it for very long, so there's no need to spend $50 or more on one, right?
If you get one don't skimp. Ecollars are one area where you really get what you pay for. I'd never buy anything other than a TriTronics or a Dogtra.
