I still have last years on my DVR haha. I'm in Savannah GA right now I can't get home in time to set the DVR in case its not the same...
Hey, we're fortunate to see this stuff in our backyard everyday, but it's great PR for the police and dogsports. And it may encourage other ppl to try to do more with there dogs and seek clubs near them ie ASR, Sch etc
This is true. It is good PR and that is needed to keep the Patrol dog alive, which serves an invaluable function. It is great to see the officers competing which only serves to strengthen them and learn more about their dog. I met a cop here in GA who said, he rarely does anything with his dog, because the dog is trained already yeah I know I was like WTF... So I definatly applaud these officers for striving to better themselves and their dogs.
You didn't happen to ask him how often he practices with his stick and pistol did you?
Probably even less than he does with his dog. You'd be surprised how little most cops train (for ANYTHING) after they get out of the academy, other than required qualifying, etc.
Really makes people like me, that DO train a lot, mad.
It's a rerun of the 2004 Nationals . The 2005 Nationals were this past Sept. and Animal Planet/Discovery wasn't there .
To be honest about the K9 Cop Challenge we are discussing , I had 1 of the camera crews riding along with me for quite awhile . They originally wanted to focus more on what these dogs do for real on the street and what the handlers and dogs go through . All the footage they had of me and other handlers in my department was real street work . All of that except for a few of the guys that went to Nationals , hit the editting room floor . The camera crew were mainly folks from the UK that had filmed in Iraq , Afganistan and other hostile places . I'm sure their idea of what they wanted to show was much different than what was finally made. They started filming a year before the 2004 Nationals .They were some hardcore brave individuals that's for sure .
They also had alot of bad luck . Oklahoma was the original host city and they backed out early into 2004 so all the filming they did there was for nothing . Punta Gorda , Florida then became the host city and they were hit hard by a hurricane just weeks before the Nationals were to be held there .The Nationals were then postponed a few weeks and held in Huntsville , Alabama . So they had alot of unuseable footage and very little time to film anything else . When they presented it to the Discovery Channel they descided to make it into a more " family friendly " show resulting in K9 Cop Challenge ..
I personally would like to see more coverage of Protection K9 stuff (Police K9 , ASR , Scht. , Ring sports , Etc.)on TV . I always like watching good dogs work and having fun no matter what the sport . I can't believe channels like Animal Planet , Discovery , National Geographic or ESPN haven't picked up on them .
I find them much more exciting then dock jumping competitions , agility or hunting trials I've seen on TV for awhile now . No offense to those sports , I've been to some hunting trials and dock jumping competitions having had hunting dogs . It may be a good thing for these sports though . If they became popular these sports may be hurt in the long run .
