My pup likes to eat ants - is this bad for him? I mean, they're so small, but they also bite - wouldnt he be getting ant bites on his tongue? Or while they go down his digestive system? Or is it normal for a dog to eat ants?
Hi Mike, my last GS used to catch and eat bees, wasps ect.
He would just snap at them and if he caught them, he would eat them. Sometimes he would yelp, but this never discouraged him from doing it again, I really don't think a few ants will hurt, it is extra protein!!!
Mike
I have heard that the military teaches downed pilots to eat ants as a food source if they are downed behind enemy lines. I do not pretend to be an expert in this area my main concern would be if there are any types of ants that would be poisonous to your dog. I know that you are in FL and the main pproblem is fire ants. I would be concerned with your dog getting attacked from a hill while he was trying to eat. Again I am no expert and just a newbie on the board.
Good Luck
Terry
If we have ants walking around the kitchen floor he'll chase em n eventually disappear. I haven't caught him trying to do this outside, he seems intrigued by the single ants running over the tile floor more than anything. We have a huge fire ant problem in this area thanks to idiot neighbors that don't maintain their lawn, but I dont think he's ever tried to get into one, it seems to be the lil black dot running on the white tile that triggers his prey drive
"I think trying to eat fire ants with most dogs would be a self limiting problem."
However......if you could breed for that trait, you'd make millions of dollars selling those dogs down South.
Do you remember the Ortho commercials that got them in trouble with PETA? I tried to find the website that has them. Fireants are not your friends ect. I'll keep trying.

PETA objected to that? Did they ask the ants how they felt about us? I'm almost convinced the fire ants see us either as enemies or a venom testing unit, not friends.
