I don't know if you know Hans and Diego, Scott, but when doing the object guard (or pretty much anything else) Diego usually looks a lot like a rabid hyena on speed. Which makes this sequence so funny. Vince had finally convinced Diego that the 'piece of grass' in his hand was worth investigating, after months of trying to fake him out.
You're right of course, about having the proper level dog for certification, but up here in the sticks you sort of have to take what you can get sometimes. And even then there's no guarantee the dog isn't going to throw some curve balls.
I realize we all have to work with what we have (it sucks). I'm sure Vince earned his certification. Unfortunately, the dog learned that it's ok to get faked out. with the prong and long line on him (in the pic), the dog should have been signaled to bite (but I know, it was a certification).
I recently purchased an older Ring 3 dog. I bought the dog to help us learn on many levels. It's nice to see what high level exercises are supposed to look like (ha..ha..). And it's great for the decoys to practice also. He could also be used for decoy selections locally.
Well I guess we're double lucky in our club. We've got Vince who DEFINATELY has earned his certification. As well as a working Ring III dog (coincidentally Vinny's dog) in our club. We have talked about buying a Ring III dog to use but only because we've got some people (myself included) that are interested in certifying as decoys and we don't want to hammer on Bomber as we stumble through the learning curve.
And Corey is right. Diego is NOT a dog that will let that happen again. A hyena on speed is the understatement of the year for that guy. (and never mind doing an object guard, he's an evil prick during his OB routine!
It seems like you guys have a nice variation of breeds in your club, too. I love to see that in a club (a Border Collie???)
Hi there!
I am in tiny club around her and we are doing mondio. My dogs I am training are GSD but I did bring out my little 6 Border Collie out one day for training. Wicked...all we had to do was show her it was ok to bite and that is all she wrote. First time out long sendaways over obstacles, flying to get the sleeve and hitting hard for a 35lbs Border. The decoy picked her up and tried to get her to let go but is was not happening. I just really can't work her due to the fact that she is kind of toothless due to always carring stuff around
The Collie on the website earned like a 90 something in her brevet too. That dog isn't with the club any more, but we've got a new lady that's been coming out and she's got a blue heeler and a border collie... Fun fun dogs !!

the little Barracuda...a 91.5, actually. And at the grand old age of 7 1/2. Thanks for the kind words, Grant.
I guess it's pretty small potatoes in the grand scheme of things but it still makes me grin. If she was a few years younger (and her canine teeth weren't worn down) she would probably still be out there chewing on decoys and making the crowd chuckle (with us, not at us...right?...)
I love it. And I am right there with you! None of mine will ever lay off retrieving things. No matter what!
