I put this on the wrong post. However I would like to know if Great Dane's have ever been used in French Ring, Schutzund or Personal Protection. Please let me know and possibly refer me to a reputable breeder.
Not that I have ever heard about or read about. I'm going to go out on a line with this statement, but I believe a great dane in FR would almost be impossible. Great danes lack many very vital characteristics for the work you asked about, but I learned along time ago theres always a first for everything.
~CHRIS DUHON
There have been some SchH III Great Danes in East Germany in the 1980's.
I've never heard of any in FR or PSA/ ASR and I suspect that won't be changing for the reasons that Chris mentioned.
They had a video on the site a while back (I have it on my computer) of a dog named "Aris" that they said was a BH, PPD2, SchH2 "Level 3 Protection" dog. They don't show much, they show the dog biting a helper wearing a sleeve. The great danes I've come accross tend to be very friendly sweet goofy dogs that would probably go into big time avoidance sooner than doing protection work, but perhaps sport bitework is a possibility to some extent. Maybe there's bloodlines out there that can do a better job, who knows.
If anyone is interested in seeing the video of Aris let me know n I'll upload it somewhere n put a link in this thread to it. It's nothing special, but I wanted to show it to someone I know who has a great dane.
Besides the problems you would have finding a Great Dane with the necessary drives they wouldn't be capable to withstand the pressure the Ringdogs scelet is subjected to when jumping off the palissade.
I had two Great Danes when I was younger. I'm still new to dog sports and formal protection training so I can't offer much info there.
However, the two that I had were very protective of their home and family. I suspect they are probably too "soft" in temperament for a lot of serious training. They are very sensitive (BIG babies). But if an intruder were stupid enough to not notice our 2, 170 pound Great Danes, and actually attempted to break in, they would be in for a world of trouble.
As watch dogs go, I'd say they do a fine job. They're alert and willing to bark, but not obnoxious about it. And in terms of deterrents I can't think of any dog that looks more intimidating than a pissed off Great Dane.
My girlfriend has a Great Dane, and I must concur that they are indeed VERY soft, and affectionate dogs. Basically, 170 lb lap dogs. I'm doing some OB with him now and he's doing well enough, I suppose. But it's always a challenge to keep his drives and focus up. It only lasts for a few minutes at a time. Of course, he's an AKC dog (rescue) so no surprise there.
Not sure if there are really any TRUE working lines left. I've heard in Germnay that there ARE people working some Danes in Schutzhund, but I'm sure it's few and far between. Many could probably go to SchH 1, although it would be almost entirely prey with a known helper on a home field.
Shame what has happened to such a great breed that at one time, was ALL business and was fantastic at what it was bred for -- hunting boars.

Please review the rules *closely* about posting photo's in any section but the Member's Bio section.
"There is a place on my web board where people can post photos of themselves and their dogs. I allow two photos. One has to contain a the dog and handler (owner) Any new threads after of 8-10-05 that contain more than 2 photos will be deleted. Any thread that contains 2 photos without one containing a photo of the owner will be deleted."
If there is something else, please point it out to me...because according to this it seemed to me that the pictures were permitted being that the photo showed the handler/owner standing next to his dog. I wasn't aware of any other rules, but I will be glad to follow them.
Lee,
Try reading a little closer, ok?
And this isn't the place where the pictures are allowed, as I stated before.
