I was wondering if this is a good idea for dog owners. I have come across a website that stated that pet insurance was nothing but a scam to get your money. Does anyone have any experience with having pet insurance for their animals? good or bad? I was just curious if it would be a useful thing to invest in or a total waste of money. Seems a little ify to me. I've done just a little research so far. I guess the only way you'd know for sure if it worked good is to try it out.. what do you think?

I have pet insurance on both my dogs and it certainly has saved me in vet bills. Both of my dogs had to have costly procedures done and they paid for most of the costs. Dante had a root canal done to a lower canine he broke. It cost me $600 and they paid $450. Bodie had to have surgery for intenstial and splenic torsion and that bill was $500 and they paid $400. I sent my claim in and three weeks I had a check. That's not to say they don't hassle anyone because insurance companies are all the same human or pet LOL I've just had really good results with them. I have the highest plan for each dog and pay $35.00 for both dogs a month (about $17.50 a dog). If you get the cheaper plan then the rates will be cheaper. I use Veterinary Pet Insurance. I think their website is http://www.veterinarypetinsurance.com

I think the website that was skeptical about pet insurance was http://www.roen.com/970714.html The main company that they mentioned was VPI and i believe that company no longer exists (I could be wrong). The statement at the beginning of the page says that it is outdated ,but still useful. Maybe pet insurance has come aways since then... I spent about 1 1/2 hours looking through different policies from different companies. One that didn't seem half bad was http://www.petshealthplan.com . Overall the premiums don't look all that expensive. Anyway, I just thought i'd get some input from some people who have been there and done this sort of thing, and see if it is worth the effort

A while back I seem to remember that The Straight Poop had a pet health insurance recomendation. I don't remember who it was with? Anybody get that one? I think it was Ed's recomendation. Might be wrong.

I have VPI on my animals and have been quite pleased. They have a preventive plan, as well. I pay about the same amount, around 17.00 dollars per animal. They have the same expectations as all insurance companies, no pre-existing problems, etc. Also, they don't cover many inheirated diseases or conditions.

VPI is Veterinary Pet Insurance and they still exist because my pets are with them. Like I stated before I have had good luck with them but not everyone I have talked to has. You just have to research and find what's best for you and your dog.

I have my dogs on a plan that is only available in my local area, but there may be similar plans elsewhere. It's not actually considered insurance in the technical sense, but a pet plan. It's actually kind of like an HMO. They do not deny any pets, regardless of pre-existing conditions. I only pay a $15 co-pay per vet visit, 20% off procedures, surgery and prescriptions, and all vaccinations are free. You do have to use certain vets, but my chosen vet was already on the list. I pay $36/month for 5 dogs, and it definitely pays for itself and then some. I've also checked out VPI and Pets Health Plan, but they're a bit more expensive. They do seem to pay a higher portion of the bill for surgeries and major procedures, but you can't predict how often that will happen, so it's all just a guessing game.

I think the key is to buy a dog from a good and reputable breeder. One that emphasizes on health! That way you have less chances of having to use the insurance and therefore less chances of haveing to pay out the wazoo for the over-all health of your dog. That's what I've gathered so far anyway.
