Yikes, here is what happened last night at my novice dog obedience class:
Well, all of our dogs (about 8) were in a down stay about 20 feet from us all nice and laid back. I was talking to the trainer while keeping my eye on my 3 year old GSD (he is neutered) when all of a sudden a Mal. (who is wearing a muzzle by the way; thank goodness) breaks his down, jumps up and charges towards me!! At the time I had no idea that this dog was also being trained in schutzhound so I didn't know that this dog was going for my arm. A few strides before the mal. reached me, my dog leapt up and jumped on the dog, grabbed him by the neck and took him to the floor. I was so astonished, I had no idea what the heck was happening. Anyhow, I grabbed my dog (I risked grabbing him by the collar in my state of panic) and pulled him aside and immediately started working him in downs, sits etc to take his mind off things. Well, the owner of the mal. gave me the dirtist look and spend the next ten minutes patting her dog down looking for wounds. There was none but I felt like I was to blame since at that time I didn't know her dogs intentions and I thought my dog acted out of control. After talking to the trainer after class she told me that the owner has been having problems with this dog (thus, the muzzle as it turns on her sometimes!)and told me about the schutzhound training, and that from her point of view her dog was going to attack me (why me I don't know, could have been my hat or a motion I made?) and that my dog saw this and was protecting me. Who the hell knows, but either way I was shaken up for a bit and so was my dog.
Do you guys think that this will affect my dogs behaviour towards other dogs in the future? He is already slightly dog aggressive but now.......????
P.S. : her dog is banned from this class until she has more control over it.
She is not banned from novice OB class altoghter with her dog, she just has to switch to a different class time as the trainer is worried that our two dogs will get into it again. I am feeling badly enough as it is since I should have been paying more attention watching my dog to make sure he stayed, so I suppose that I answered my own question about being in the wrong (I lacked control over my dog also).
I've never trained at, or taught an obedience class that allowed a muzzled dog to join in a group of novice dogs/trainers. I could be wrong though. Dogs being trained for schutzhund don't "go for my arm." They go for sleeves. Just my own observations. Just plain gut instincts tell me the story is......shall we say.......embellished! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />
