I'm just curious. I've had my dog for 2yrs, since he was 10wks old, and have bathed him twice and that was in the first month to get rid of that "doggie shelter" smell. He hasn't been bathed since.
I let him be a dog; He swims in the lake/ocean a few times a week during season, he plays w/other dogs, rolls around on the ground (sand, dirt, stinky stuff). Rotti mix short hair. He gets brushed occasionally, more during shedding season. His coat is healthy and shiny, no "dog" odor.
Only when they need it. I don't like stripping the oils off their coats if I don't have to. Indoor guys normally 2x/year. Ones that are rotated in/out 3-4 a year.
Whenever they stink so much that I can still smell 'dog' on my hands 5 minutes after petting them
I bathed him when I first got him, twice because he was stupidly dirty n stinky, n Saturday night because he puked up n had diarhea in his crate so he was a super stinky doggy... he's 18 months old and I've had him since he was 4 months old.
My wifes Papillion everytime my dog desides to baptise her and I've baathed my Malinois once after a training where he stumbled into freshly painted objects and he was more green and white than his original colour
My Sheba... because he spends more time outside and tends to be a stinker dog in general we bath him probably once a month... but he loves a bath and during his more civil days wouldn’t think twice about jumping in the tub with the kids. After a bath he runs around all crazy and happy. He likes that fresh dog feeling.
My GSD has been here since August and we haven't bathed her yet. We tried a couple times to coax her into the tub... but she would have no part… and I am not one to hose a dog down with ice cold water in the back yard. I doubt she was raised around water. We took her to the lake this summer and she wouldn’t get in. She doesn't stink at all and has a beautiful shinny coat so I am not too concerned.
Not to hijack the thread… but how often do you cut their toe nails?
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”
It' become strikingly clear that my dog is not a working dog I bathe Abby 2 - 3 times a week. Haven't had problems with a dry coat or skin, but I do use absorbable coat oil on her occassionally too.
Nails trimmed or filed every week - and sometimes a fresh coat of pink nail polish.
