Has anyone got the new heartworm injection put on their dogs? I wanted to buy the 6 months supply tablets today for my 7 months old and the vet told me that the injection was cheaper and I didn't have to worry about given her the tablet every month. My concern is that I heard from someone that this new injection is not as effective? That it has not been sucessful? Is this true? Anyone know about it?
nope, i inquired about it ,vet told me they like to give something new a couple of years to see how it works.
they also are a bit weary of having so much medication in the dog at one time.
basically giving a 6 month dose all in one.
i never 'worry' about giving the monthly tablet
i use Interceptor and i put the reminder sticker on my Dobe calendar each month for the season. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I have had the 12month shot in one of mine. When asked of the efficiency and of any side effects my vet said that they felt that it was just as effective as giving the tablets on time and more so than the average consistancy of occasionaly forgetting it. as for side effects they said that none of the dogs they had administered it to had had any side effects to date. they are a vary popular clinic and they have a large clientel from pets to their specialty in racing greyhounds so it seems well tested in their clinic alone.
I would NEVER use this... just as I would never use a topical flea product. It is just injecting insecticides into your dogs bloodstream.. stick with the daily Filarabits.. or the monthly Heartguard. When you read the labels the warnings are so bad for humans.. what do you think it will do to your dogs...
Funny; I was just talking with my vet about this new "wonder drug". From his information; the new six month injectable heartworm prevention is just as expensive as a six month supply of Interceptor with limitations of only providing heartworm protection as opposed to Interceptor which offers parasite control as well (with the exception of tape worm). Since it has only been on the market for a limited time with a limited testing period; he is not too enthused about administering. I will stick with Interceptor for my heartworm prevention.
