Good day everyone.
Well, after reading quite a few of the different raw diet posts and seeing where everyone gets their meat, I realized that a few of you (us) get your chicken and other meats from Walmart b/c of the price. Tonight, I took that advice and took a spin over to the Walmart SuperStore here in the area.
Upon arriving I found a great deal on "County Post" chicken leg quarters. It ended up being only $.40/lb. I grabbed a bag and headed home.
After preparing for the freezer, I happened to look on the bag and noticed that the chicken had things added to it. Which I found kind of odd. The package said that they added: Chicken Broth, Sodium Phosphate, Salt and Carageenan.
Are those anything I need to worry about feeding to my pup? All the other meat I bought was just straight MEAT. No additives like that. I would've taken it back, but I already opened the package and cut one of the quarters up.

Well, if it's any help - I notice that most of the whole turkey's being sold in stores for the holiday's have the exact same stuff in them.

I fed those walmart chicken quaters to my pup with no problem. It is optimal to feed items without added salt and such, but like I said, my pup didn't have a problem with them.

Those additive are added to "brine" (add moisture to) the chicken. Ideally you want just "straight" meat and definitely no salt.
Lately I've been purchasing Tyson whole chickens at Costco, nothing added at $.69/lb which is cheaper than buying leg quarters at $.75/lb unless I find a good sale. We don't have Walmart in NYC but because of their unfair employment practices I probably wouldn't shop their anyway.

My dog won't eat raw chicken, but if he did, I wouldn't buy him anything with salt. Salt no good for doggies just like it's no good for babies. But the big rolls of ground beef at walmart are usually a pretty good deal

You won't shop at Walmart because of "their unfair employment practices" yet you buy Tyson chicken products? Ummm....ok....

When I buy the frozen bagged chicken quarters, breasts, etc. I always rinse them off really well before feeding them. I know it doesn't get rid of all of the additives, but it makes me feel a little better anyway. These don't make up the bulk of what I feed when I feed raw, so I'm not too worried about it. I stock up on whole chickens when Ingles has them on sale, and buy almost out-of-date meat from the meat counter for 75% or more off, and that's what makes up the bulk of my raw food. I only resort to feeding the frozen bagged stuff when I'm in a pinch or forget to lay one of my portioned bags out to thaw.

What Kristen just said is important - rinsing and cleaning of the chicken that you get is an impotant step that a lot of people skip.
I'm always surprised at the amount of feather remains that I need to pluck off of the chicken that I buy from Walmart...

I buy 40lb cases of necks and backs from a local butcher for $12-$13/case. Comes out to $.30-$.32/lb. We just separated and bagged 3 cases Fri night, which will last my dogs approx 2mths. We alternate with ground turkey, beef, livers, mackerel...
The chicken cases are semi-frozen, packed on ice, and as far as I can tell, do not have any additives. The backs usually have a ton of breast meat still on them, as well as organ pieces-parts. Found a few heads in the neck cases this time....ooooh, double bonus!

Another thing that sometimes works out is going to a small, independent grocery store or a butcher shop (if you can find one anymore) and asking for pieces of meat that are either too small to be sold, or too bony, etc. Larger chains aren't allowed to do this. I asked once, and the butcher said someone sued them because their dog choked on a bone that they had given them. The meat had been given to them "out the back door". So, to protect themselves, they have to throw away all their scrap meat. But I've gotten a lot of good, fresh meat from a small grocer near my house.
