For those of you who don't know/have forgotten or simply don't care (!), I have a 1 year old male Rottie.
Should he be neutered? When? If he isn't, will he be harder to control?
If he is neutered, will he turn into a big fluffy doorstop with the aggresion of an anorexic snail?
Have you had your dog neutered? How long did it take for him to recover?
I honestly don't know if I have the balls (pun intended) to go through with it!
Regards

No... Never if it can be helped. No...

At a year old his testrone level is almost at full tilt.. a neuter now would be pointless...his temperment is well set at this age, you need to do it by 6 mo before any real changes will happen.

I had my 3 year old Rott done, what a mistake that was, I will never do that again unless it is a life or death situation. It took about a month and a half to recover fully.
My advise.. don't do it!

Hi Andy
I'm also interrested in this topic. I know that Ed recommends to neutern after 2 years of age.
Did anybody neuter a dog after this time and how did it affect his fight drive? Are there neutered police dogs?

Please re-read that artical, Ed has specific reasons for neutering. I did my Rott at 3 and it did not effect his drives one iota. It did however result in a lot of pain for him... Like I said, I will never do that again unless it's life or death. My reason was to try and lessen his dog aggressiveness... didn't work. I was told over and over that dogs with balls cause tension with dogs that don't...but now I don't really care if it does or not.. Control is where it's at.
As far as Police Dogs.. have no idea, I'm sure there is somewhere.

Ok, no big surprise that the MEN don't think you should neuter<G>! However, I have neutered two dogs, one at the age of 3, one at 4. It didn't change their attitude in the work or their working ability one bit; however, it did have a significant affect on their marking behavior and sniffing. The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 7/97, had a study on the effects of neutering adult dogs. It was interesting - I'll post it when I get home and have the journal article in front of me.

Well just to be fair then, no spaying either. Me being male has nothing to do with it... Hey is this some form of Male discrimanation? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
That's intresting Sch3FH2, my Rott still marks and sniffs every dam tree...now I am curious...

The health benefits for spaying and neutering will not only prevent unplanned litters but will also prolong the dog's life in the long run.
Neutering will prevent prostrate cancer which is prevelant in male dogs. I am of the rule..everything is spayed/neutered just prior to six months old.
After a year old..the recovery time is probably a couple of days. As the dog gets older..the recovery time is longer. You can also run into more post surgical issues the older the dog is.
I avoid the overnight stay prior to the surgery by ending his food no later than 8PM the night before and dropping the dog off in the early AM hours and then pick the dog up in the evening on my way home from work. The dog is thus less stressed this way.

There was an article that Cindy Easton told me about that new studies show that dogs that are neutered have a 60% more chance of getting bone cancer. It seems your damned if you do and damned if you don't <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Ok, found the JAVMA study (7/97) on castration at > 2 yrs of age. All dogs in the study had "problem" behaviors. The three behaviors that were significantly improved by castration were urine marking, mounting, and roaming. For behaviors related to aggression (towards family member, strange dogs, unfamiliar people), only approx. 25% of the dogs had a reduction of between 50-90% in the behavior problem. There was no significant correlation between the age of the dog or the duration of the problem behavior and the degree of improvement after castration.

I agree with the statement made by Karmen on that article that's mentioned.
If you do neuter them though your taking a serious decrease in it's drive. That drive is necessary for Police dogs, Sports, and Personal Protection. If you want them to be watered down, then fine. But then again what's the point in having one? Basically even if it did decrease health, etc. -I'm Not Saying It Does- it's totally necessary for the breed's ability.
Regardless of health issues I would be curious to see the life span statistics of both dogs that have had the surgery compared to the ones without. I've noticed many big guns here have had dogs live 12 to 13 years plenty of times without neutering them. So I would be curious to see the statistics.
