My dog loves to track, but he does it a little to fast,i will try and put treats out in the trail so the dog stops and learn to slow down.
Is there other ways to learn a dog to slow down when he is tracking?
Treats might tend to make him faster, trying to get to the
next treat? Is the dog pulling you down the track? Try a
prong collar, either live ring or both rings. depending to how strong the dog is?
Another consideratin: HOw well does he track? If the dog
stays on the track with his nose down and nails the corners and articles? You don't lose points for being fast :-)
He tracks well, but at his speed,he could loose the track,so it is better to teatch him to calm down.
I was think to lay treats in different palces, close to eachother in the track,it makes the dog stop,he cant run away in the track.
But the prong collar might be effective,i will try that.
Thanks!

one thing that worked for me was having the leash on the harnaas or collar under the stomach and up between the back legs.sure slowed mine down <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> You could always give it a go. I got mine to slow down by using the word "easy" and giving a slight correction. I wouldt advise correction if the dog is new to tracking or the dog could see this as a negative correction and wont want to track at all/ Try the leash between the back legs..usually works gr8.
A lot depends here on what your goals are for tracking. If you are training for SAR or police work and doing TTD (tracking through drive) you do not want to put a prong collar on. It is about leash/line handling/pressure etc. Think Ed has some good articles on this site that can help you with it.
In SchH tracking (footstep) tracking, they use food all the time. Think I have also seen some with prong collars on? Put a piece of food in every foot step you take.
Yes it is IPO (shutzhund tracking, and yes i will try to put foos in every step.It will slow my dog down. ; )
I think prong collar might be good too.I will test all adwice i have been given and see which one is the best.
(p,s i know that prong collar is not allowed in competitions, but it might be useful in training)
