If anyone wants to post photos of their scartch boxes - its OK to do so in this thread. There are a number of designs that go beyond a 1 foot square box. It would be nice to get some good ideas here.
This is a picture of what I have built. The sizes are not important, but the design is easy to follow. The inside dividers can be left out. Some like to hide the reward inside with the scented artical, this way the reward will stay seperated from the scented artical. The big considerations are; the peg board sliding in a daddo cut, and it is eather tight enough in the daddo or a nail/peg can be dropped in one of the holes to keep the dog from opening it up with his digging. http://myspace-195.vo.llnwd.net/00341/59/16/341466195_l.jpg
Thanks for letting us share designs Ed. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Here is a primary reward design I like for passive dogs. I could probably get a savvy carpenter to put this design on an angle so we could build scratch with it.
My team is currently using rubbermaid containers (rectangular about 12"x8" or similar) for protocol training. A round hole is cut in top and whatever odor you are training is placed inside. The reward comes from the handler or a helper when the dog meets whatever response you are looking for (ie odor recognition, the final response, or focus on the box). The reward is given without the dog seeing where it comes from. It's a cheap method (although we normally use 12x12" cardboard boxes) and the bonus is that the boxes are washable and won't wear out as easy as cardboard boxes...
Yes Bob... when you pull the string it raises the reward out of the hole. I was thinking with a little work you could make an angled version with three or four of them mounted on a half sheet of plywood so some of out aggressive dogs could also use it to build up their scratch.
