My GSD 1 year just started limping. it seems only on rough driveway or rocks. he is very athletic. He seems alright when he is inside or on grass. I have looked at his feet and they seem ok. not sure what to do.
My otis did the same thing. I increased his diet
and the limping went away for a while. I fed him some more at each feeding and again it went away. I think it is like growing pains and when the diet is good like the barf diet and enough is fed they have all they need to grow healthy.
Hard to tell really. Probably pano. If it is and this just started today he will probably be limping more tomorrow. Only way to tell is to have xrays done at a vet.
With mild lameness it will show up more at the trot and on hard surfaces at first. Chasing the ball at a dead run is really not a good indicator. Good drive will take over for the pain.
If it is Pano? why would it only seem to happen on rough surfaces. He walks ok inside or on the grass? Some days he seems fine then he just starts limping.
I have no way of telling you what is wrong with your dog. I can't see or touch him through my laptop.
I must have missed before that it was only rough surfaces, what you mentioned led me to think HARD surfaces. At any rate, if it were my dog I would take it in for x-rays. Probably why my vet likes me....
The reason I thought it might be pano is the whole sometimes it is worse than others thing. Pano is also called "wandering leg lameness" as it will shift from leg to leg until the dog is over 2.
Grass and carpet (assuming you have carpet) is padded. Gravel and driveways are not. Since the pain is affected by the impact of the stride it would be more noticeable on hard surfaces.
It could be a dislocated toe as well. Again, I can't tell you and you probably need to get x-rays.
You may want to try some pad toughner, in case his pads are not hard enough to be comfortable on rough ground. I like to use "Tuff Foot" as it doesn't leave residue on the carpet. He may just need to have a thicker pad to resist rocks, etc.
