Yeah, that's what I'd like to do. I just want to make sure I have as accurate a head count as I can before the big day. I'm paranoid about something going wrong.
IME and IMO I wouldn't xray. There is really no way of knowing what effects the radiation has on the pups. I know I am a bit of a freak about the whole health thing with my dogs and pups, but I've probably whelped more litters than you care to even think about and the only time I've ever xrayed is after a whelping when I'm not convinced everyone's out. Now if I raised English Bulldogs I might have a different frame of mind.
Xrays are not always accurate either. I worked for a vet for over a decade and the little suckers can lay in such a way that they overlap and you may (or may not) get an accurate count. He'd say 8 pups and there would be 9 or some such thing like that.
Your dog is young, healthy and fit. Keep her conditioned and in the last couple weeks start taking her temp twice a day and make a chart. Email me if you have to. Don't be paranoid, be excited! You don't want to send those kind of vibes out there or the whelping gods will oblige you. Seriously.
I can palpate a bitch and determine pregnancy at 25-28 days post breeding. I can't count them but I can determine if the bitch is pregnant or not. Never been wrong yet! I better quit while I'm ahead.
Ok, Cindy. I'll drive her to Wisconsin between 25-28 days!
I may not xray. I know it isn't totally accurate, but people were scaring me w/stories of having 2-3 pups stuck or dead and the health risks to the dam, so I was worried about someone being stuck in there after I thought she was done b/c I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I know I'm being paranoid.
You're right; she's barely 2, she's in outstanding condition, and I'm sure it'll be fine. I don't like radiation at all, but I thought at the very end, a single xray to determine approximate number of pups might be less of a risk than not.
I should relax; I have plenty of time to do more research on whelping. And I am excited.......I just don't want to do anything detrimental to Capri's health just for the sake of breeding her.
