Earlier when I was reading this thread I wondered about the shedding potential of mals, since its not the guard hair length but the undercoat that is the culprit. Pretty much all of the herding breeds have an undercoat, right? Most were originally bred to be all weather dogs who could work all day in damp climates.
I know some long coated GSDs don't have an undercoat, but I'm not sure about Border Collies.

Lauren have you tried the Furminator on your Mal? It worked absolute wonders on the Akita-mix we have right now who was blowing his undercoat when he found us. He looks like a new man, and hardly sheds at all after daily Furminations!
A dog has alot of friends because he wags his tail instead of his mouth.
We furminate twice a week this time of year, once a week in the winter. I don't think I could live without a furminator! I also brush her almost everyday..
I still have little puppies floating around the house, and the rug in the back seat of my car is coated with enough dog hair that you could make a whole new dog out of it. I have to dust it off of the blades of the ceiling fans, and I have to sweep the common hallway because it floats out under my front door

I add googly eyes to them, craft projects for the preschool!
Yes GSD's shed more, but Mals do still shed, if you have to vacuum, sweep anyway, it really doesn't matter how much more fur, just that you love the breed
I normally brush / furminator Falcon on a picnic table under some trees for the shade factor. A few weeks ago I found a tiny, perfectly constructed bird nest - completely made out of Falcon's fur! It had blown out of a tree (fortunately no eggs yet). It was absolutely beautiful with the mixed colors of cream, blacks, golden tones!
I used the furminator this AM right outside the garage door and got wayyyy too hot pretty quickly - it is beastly hot here today. Didn't clean up my mess and went out a while ago to numerous doggie tumble weeds billowing around the driveway...
