There's something almost... disturbing about being able to eat summer melons in December.
It was a pretty exciting day when the Myracle house joined the organic CSA.
Yeah, I got my first box last Friday. I'd forgotton how cukes from the garden have little nubbles all over them. And I'm widening my culinary horizons as well, since I get whatever's ready to harvest at the time. I made mustard greens this weekend. They were pretty good, too!
We got cukes this week too! The kiddo loves them with ranch dip, so he's claimed those as his this week.
Last week I discovered that beets coarsely chopped make an awesome addition to tuna salad. Additional bonus: persons under the age of ten can be persuaded to eat almost anything bright pink.

Thanks Leih!
Now I'm going to find a local CSA. There's a farm right off the freeway that I can't for the life of me figure out how to get to. I want to pull over one day, leave my car on the side of the road, and run down the hill and hopefully make it through the cattle pen to the other side and find the owner, yelling at him/her, "HEY! CAN I BUY FOOD FROM YOU??"
Hopefully he/she says yes and doesn't arrest me. Owner even has goats. I bet Conan would love goat.

My father used to steam up a whole pile of just-dug baby beets (no, we had no farm, but he always had a quarter of an acre or so of the yard in vegetables ) and leave a bowl of them on the kitchen counter like peanuts or candy. He used to say about any suspicious (to kids) produce, as he chewed it up and made yum sounds, "Just like a Nestle's bar!" He pronounced it Nessle instead of Ness-lee, I assume to make it more amusing (in his mind).
I found that I love beets best with an acid sprinkled on: vinegar or even citrus. And do I love them pickled! Hoo-boy! Just like a Nestle's bar!
Aaron, grated cukes, drained for while first if you have time (eaten immediately after mixing if you didn't have time to get some of the water out), are great mixed into plain yogurt for a sauce or dip for spicy Mexican or Indian foods.
Probably gorgeous with some bright-pink beet juice added, too!
