Really, even being such a good family dog is typical?
Thats pretty amazing. I haven't seen any videos of her protection work, but from what you say about her I imagine she can be intense.
I have always been impressed by her obedience in the videos you have shared here.
from the ones I've seen yea. My Roxie was a brood bitch, only knew how to foos, bite and whelp. lived in a kennel her entire life. I got her as an adult, two weeks in the house she was house broke and loved everybody in her new family. Only had one close call, my daughter's arm was in a cast, Roxie thought it was a bite sleeve

well lets not go into the realm of PPD yet. Those are just what I'd like done. For now he's a puppy and will be socialized and treated like a puppy.
Wife said outright we are getting the dog after reading all these posts.
just my two cents, but never, never will my puppy play with very young children because she is getting puppy bite training, and it really hurts,
I'm 36 and play rough with my mastiffs one 195lbs, the other 225 I have no problem with my neice and nefiews (3, 5, 9)playing with then when An adult is present, even though I trust them (they were stopped from mouthing day one i got them)I always put a 1.5foot line on their collars.
so, is this pup getting socialized as a working or pet puppy

Kids indeed do, do weird things to dogs. When I worked at the Humane Society, there was a huge ongoing legal battle over a dog who had caused a young boy to need 100+ stitches in his face. The dog belonged to the boy's grandmother, and nobody wanted him PTS but animal control. The toddler had been left unattended with the dog and jammed a pencil in his ear. Who's responsible for that? The adult in charge of course. But who ends up paying the price?

That is aweful.
I am always amazed how many people don't teach their kids how to act around dogs. So many little kids will stare, scream, and act crazy around a dog, with the parents standing right there.
I grew up next door to two pit bulls that were pretty dangerous. They were probably fighting dogs. The owner was a drug dealer scum bag.
My parents had no problems making us a little afraid of them. We were taught not to run by the fence, not to make eye contact with them and to be quiet when they were out. If they were out we walked quietly by ignoring them.
My mother, in her old school parenting, had no problems with telling us that the dogs could kill us if we taunted them.

I've had to teach the neighbor kid how to act around my dogs when they are out. The girl is pretty soft so she's more happy go lucky, the world is a parade, kind of dog.
The boy...well, this kid messed up with the boy. We were out one day, exercising, playing fetch and the kid came over wanting to play. Next thing I knew, he had his arms in the air, bellowing in a low tone, chasing the dog. Naturally my dog did not like this. My dog ran towards me but now when he sees the kid, he's not exactly anxious to go near him and has barked at him a few times.
Because he's a kid, I've taken this opportunity to teach him how to act around a dog and telling him what his actions look like to a dog by comparing it with a 6' man doing the same to him. Would he feel threatened?
So we are working on rebuilding some sort of trust between my dog and the kid simply because I do not need any incident in the future.
We have finally built up enough that my dog will go near him again. So yesterday we did more work, with treats. He tried to pet my dog and the dog didn't want a thing to do with that so I had him pet, nicely, while he gave the treats. The "trust" is starting to slowly come back.
The kid is also starting to get it. Think about how your actions look to the animal. He doesn't chase them anymore, he doesn't talk in a low tone to them anymore, he is much better behaved around them. I've had to UNdo what his parents told him to do. Unreal.

Dear Abbie,
Is eighteen months old still considered puppy bite training? Or should I consider it a 'people training' problem?
I still get nailed once and awhile.
Signed,
Numby
