Will,
Sometime this past spring, in a public park in Colorado where sheep herding is permitted, a couple of great pyrenees mauled a bicyclist who passed too close to the flock. I think this shows the dogs have the potential for attacking people. It doesn't make them PPDs, but they are not cuddly family pets either. The dogs were driven off by other humans, however, so they did give up the fight.
In that case I'm not sure the dog realized it was a human - the lady admittedly rode a bike screaming into a flock of sheep after dark. I think the dog's instincts just kicked in as they are on high alert for creatures after dark. Guardian dogs normally don't just attack people and I highly doubt this one would have if it hadn't been dark or if the lady had gotten off her bike and just walked around the flock.

An anatolian shep kept as a home and sheep protector did this to my son in Spain this summer. He is very dog savvy, a good hand with dogs. The day before the dog had been friendly.
My son was staying at a farm in Spain with his grandfather(89)and grandfathers spanish girlfriend(91). Son would walk the elders in the afternoon. There were 2 dogs. The day before the two dogs had been friendly and petted by all.
Evidently my son came downstairs to go for the walk, the pair of dogs came bounding up.
Son posted about it to Connie in a PM. Perhaps she could put that here. Essentially son was a stranger (though introduced the prior day) who appeared unexpectedly (came downstairs).
This started out as a pretty old post about PPDs.
The first couple of pages from Will are solid gold and should be a "sticky" for any forum that discusses PPDs and anyone even thinking they need/want a PPD for their home.
That boy seems to be coming along just fine!
