I just can't wrap my head around why someone would hate dogs. They are the purest form of love, honesty, and commitment. To hate them is to hate what is good about yourself.

Sorry the sarcasm didn't shine through. I don't think dogs have human emotions, as they're not human, but I'm sure they have some feeling of wanting to destroy something that they don't like, whether it's the spokes on a bike, or a motorcycle helmet, or someone who they think doesn't belong on "their" territory (in this case, the street).
The comment was a reply to someone who said something Yoda like about how I won't be able to deal with the damn dogs if I had "hate and aggression." I'm not hunting them or something, I'm trying to ride a bike, sometimes with a load of food or scrap cans.
I don't think the dogs (like in that sound beeper video) want to come up and smell my crotch and sit and wag their tails. I think they want to see what my inner organs taste like.
Please link to the dog-suit & bicycle video. I'd like to share it with a bike blog.
There goes Will Rambo again, with the "you must be mentally ill if you don't like dogs" stuff. No, what's warped is people who have predatory pack animals for yard pets.
I can call the police on at least 5 houses on the street behind my house, about their dumb dogs, and the police (sheriff's dept here), won't do anything about it unless someone is bleeding or dying. This isn't Highland Park.

Here is another one of the long list of people that make me consider dogs "protected religious figures". A few more on this thread repeat the mantra "How can anyone hate a dog? There must be something wrong with you!".
I type 120 wpm, and read about as quickly, so this "10 pages" might be more challenging for some readers, esp. ones who can't relate at all to the problem I'm having.
CJ, thanks for being a good sport, and to the lady who responded about a book on dog signals/body language.
Yes, NE TX is a large place, and I mostly love it here, but information travels slow, and people are often set in their ways. Some things are dogma here. And I'm sure you could find someone on this block who would gladly pipe up and call me Hitler for my passionate enmity for bike-chasing dogs, even though Adolf Hitler was a well known dog lover. hahahahaha. I'm not going to drag ww2 politics into this interesting discussion.
Bicyclists here are a small segment. Bikes fly off the shelves at the local WongMart, but most riders here are either unorganized roadies or the casual fred on any miscellaneous bike hauling their beer and cigs or hauling ass to work and cursing their stars. I'm a chronic illness sufferer and not as cut and fit as I was 15 years ago, so I am making use of my "off time" lol (laid off, unemployed, "between jobs", "contemplating a career change" etc.)
Someone asked if I would recommend guns to children. Well, I think a lot of under 21's can shoot with the best of them, but a dozen federal laws make that kind of sticky. Kind of hard for anyone, esp a young person, to just ride around with a lever gun or shotgun.
So yeah, personally, and for the sake of bike riders everywhere and every age, I'd like to learn more about deterring problem dogs and dealing with their absentee owners or malicious owners. I guess most readers here are just going to rant like Anne Jones instead of help.
A political action committee sounds like a fine idea, but the bike club in this town even went under a few years ago. The jobs have gone to Mexico or China, and the people have gone to other Walmarts and such. I'll run some ads in the paper and write letters to some rich folks at the major company here, surely some of them still ride bikes and might have a connection to someone useful.

dog sees
That is the second biggest reason I hate dogs. They are the sacred icons of shallow people. The first biggest reason is I don't like them, and have grown to hate them from experience. No other animals come chasing after me, snarling, growling, snapping, or jumping out in front of me to ambush. It's dogs! Some other animals endanger cyclists (here, namely wild boar, rattlesnakes, and rarely but surely, some wildcats, and I've seen all of them,) but the problem I'm having is DOGS.
For sake though, I think I will call the police (non-em) and ask one of the old boys around here what can be done about it. Just 'cause you think I don't care. I do. I care about me, my kid, and anyone else who walks or rides a bike here, in fear, because of roving dogs.
I am not an animal to be hunted! And law and local custom sort of narrow my defense options.
FWIW I'll keep contact here, in hopes it will help me launch a new bike blog. Sure, I'll have to sanitize some of my feelings haha, but I think it would help a lot of people esp folks who LIKE dogs and ride bikes.

Well, I can maybe start a campaign, but I don't think I can take on all of Texas for every street and every dog in it. I'll start with NE Texas where I live. I'd like to win the 2 county roads behind my house so I can ride with my kids.
At Will, re; One of the things that I've noticed in the thread is that all of us dog owners know that it's the irresponsible dog owner that is the problem here, not the dog. If these bad owners would simply control/confine their animals, the problem is solved.
I blame the owner and the dogs. A lot of people have survived dog bites, but some have had crippling injuries (from bites or crashes- one of my friends grandma was killed by their own "pet" rottweiler), infections from bites and scratches, blood loss, broken bones, missing flesh, head injuries, and so on. I don't take this lightly.
re: If you want to find fault...blame the owners not the poor dogs that are just being dogs.
This is still totally over the top.

I have been frightened by dogs in my line of work, seen people seriously injured.
I can appreciate where you are coming from, and hope that you can find an answer that allows you to enjoy your sport and not get into a war with your neighbors.
Merry Christmas

(Emphasis mine.)
Wow. Just.....wow. So in your opinion, people who love dogs are shallow people? Really?? Seriously???
I'm outta this thread. I now believe Mr. Taylor is just trying to be intentionally provocative and is resorting to personal insults.

Okay, I give up (hanging head in defeat). Cindy asked and we tried. Tried real hard.
There is very little in this world that I cherish more than my dogs. When I first saw his words, the hairs on my neck stood up (it's gotta be close to hackling in dogs).
A dog hater here? One openly out for revenge and willing to take some pretty extreme measures to kill a dog, just because they're a dog doing what dogs do. I was so ready to verbally blast him with both barrels, loaded with just as much loathing for his presence as he was expressing about his hatred of dogs.
I bit my tongue, and bit it again and again and then swore I wouldn't look at this thread again. But it was late and quiet one night and I have to admit, I was curious as to whether anything was sinking in. Well that look sent me into another tirade. So I thought just settle down and take one more proactive kick at this ass, just try... show him what responsible dog owners have to offer.
Normally, I wouldn't waste my time on a p....person like this, yeah that's what I wanted to say. But I do respect the fact that discussion was opened up. I think it could have been a good one, if we were dealing with a....well, let's just say someone else.
I'm certainly ready to dig a hole and bury this. If we could just get the word to let loose on this..., um if we could just let loose and have some fun, I think we could make this poor boy think twice about what he’s got to say to "responsible" dog owners.

According the the CDC:
Americans treated in emergency rooms for bicycle accidents per year: 500,000
Americans who die from bicycle accidents: 700
Americans treated in emergency rooms for dog bites: 386,000
Americans who die from dog bites: 16
I am hereby initiating an all-out campaign against the bicycle. They are deadly instruments of suffering and torture, many of which exhibit hateful blood lust towards unsuspecting people. People who own bicycles are not only shallow and reckless, they endanger all of us with their foolishness.
eta: is there a bicycle-enthusiast web board I could post this to? I'm thinking that would be a good place to start this new campaign.
