It was time for Frazier's shot. I had them do the rabies as that is state law. We did the titers for the rest of the things and it showed he needs the distemper shot. What are your feeling on this.? Frazier is never around other dogs but we may need to board him this winter.

LOri,
I just give him a little of the backs but I think I"m going to increase the amount. Per Connie I changed his dinner to after 7 PM and that way he is not getting us up so early to go out in the morning. WE are night people when we can and try to sleep in a little in the AM. So that has helped a lot.
Something that I need to do is get sneaky about giving his shots. He is on to me now and does not like them. He has jerked a couple of times and I'm afraid I'm going to stick myself.
We have tried with me behind hiim and my husband giving him chicken but he still jerked. My husband suggestive sneaking up on him when he is sleeping but I don't like that idea too much. Your thoughts please.

Tell us how you trained for this (if you did) and how frequent they are.

Not sure if all dogs have to be on the shots for life, but I believe Kasey will have to be. Connie, what do you know about that?
I believe, following the testing and research, that we are a year or two (or less) from sub-lingual drops to replace them, so I wouldn't worry a lot about it. JMO!

I definitely wouldn't sneak up on him. I wish your vet would have told you what mine did! It's awesome - from the very first shot, I started positive reward training. I would get out the serum and the needle, and when he'd wonder over to see what I was doing, I'd give him a treat and say good boy! Then I'd fill the needle and show it to him, and he'd get another treat just for looking at it! Then I'd pick up a handful of his skin where the shot would be given, and he'd get another treat. He loved getting the treats so much that he wasn't even paying attention to the shot part. Then I'd give the shot and he'd get several really good treats and a bunch of 'good jobs'! I only had to do that for several shots and ever since, as soon as he hears me getting the needle out of the box he comes running in for his shot all excited. He still gets a few good treats after the shot, but he doesn't need any of the ones before.
The Derm Vet showed me to pick up a fold of skin. I'm all set to go when I do that. The last time I had my husband rub his ears and give him chicken, but like I said he is starting to jerk when the he feels the prick. I also learned I need to not let him see the syringe. They are so smart.
He gets 2 shots a week. Each shot is larger than the last. Next shot will be 3 cc. In a couple of weeks he will be up to one shot a week and 3 1/2 cc each week thereafter. Then we 'll see how he does.
Frazier is 3. He had his puppy shots and then all shots the vet recommends at 1 and 2 yrs of age.
If I'm reading the articale correctly, it sounds like he shouldn't need any more shots except for the rabes.
Am I correct on this?
