A forum member found this Purina Beneful article on Snopes (the Urban Legend debunker). Given the status on Snopes (not debunked -- undetermined, so far), I think it's worth checking out: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/beneful.asp
Seems like a lot of the media attention is slacking off a little here lately. It makes me sad to think about the people who might not have any idea what to feed anymore. Hell, if this happened a year ago I would be in the same position. I don't feel qualified to give specific advice on feeding a raw diet, but wonder if it would help to run a small article in the local newspaper that could direct people to literature, articles, or the websites that all beginners here are directed to. I know a lot of people would just like to know about the untainted kibbles that are still available. I would like to think that Lonsdale or some of the other big names had something in the works, but it sure is hard to fight billion dollar companies. Sorry if I sound a little extreme on the subject, but I hate the fact that in the end all these companies will come out smelling rosey.
I will tell you I am so sick of ASS HOLE Vets who continue to push commercial dog food on people when they should be teaching people how to feed a healthy diet. It is SOOOO easy easy to do.
Every one of you needs to look your Vet right in the eye when they give you a line of crap about commercial kibble and ask them:
1- "HOW MANY HOURS OF TRAINING HAVE YOU HAD IN NUTRITION?"
2- WHAT PERCENTAGE OF YOUR PROFIT MARGIN IS MADE FROM SELLING DOG FOOD?
3- WHY DON"T YOU SELL AN ALL_NATURAL BRAND OF DOG FOOD?
4- HOW MANY LITTERS HAVE YOU RAISE?
3- HOW MANY DOGS HAVE YOU ACTUALLY OWNED?
Until pet owners start to stand up to KNOW IT ALL VETS nothing will ever change.

I have fed RAW to my current GSD since I got him as a pup. His breeders are also pro RAW. There was a discussion on another board about vitamin supplements. One of the posters posted this thread: http://www.ilovemypet.com/jackart.html
I read it, but didn't understand all of it. What I did understand (or thought I understood) is that I might have screwed up my dog by feeding RAW because of how important it is to get the right ratio of various vitamins & minerals, into a pup & how this is pretty much impossible for the average person (like myself) to do right. Frankly, now I'm really worried. Would one of you more scientific brainiacs please read this & tell me what you think?

This conclusion is is probably creditable:
"Overnutrition from overconsumption and oversupplementation increases the frequency of developmental bone disease in large and giant-breed dogs. "
Otherwise, are you saying that wild canids who eat fresh meat and guts and a little fresh produce and feed it to their young would be better off with bowls of commercial extruded grains with a unlimited shelf life?
"Impossible for the average person" is a wonderful phrase for the kibble companies. Kind of like if Kellog said that with all the vitamins and minerals they spray onto corn flakes, we'd be a lot better off eating that three times a day for the rest of our lives than eating a variety of fresh real food.
Funny how it didn't become "impossible for the average person" until the commercial pet food industry was born in the 1900s.

I think what got me nervous was the section on Calcium & the section on Vitamin D. What I thought I understood before reading this article was that by feeding RAW & RMB from various sources my pup would be getting the amounts required in a natural way that would allow him to grow slowly & also better his chances against HD, ED & osteochondroitis. This article seems to be saying that if you don't get the percentages just right (over or under) the dog dog could face problems later in life.
