Karla, I have mentioned this thread to some of the GSD people at my club...
You ought to come watch training on Sunday. We train in Ventura this (and every) Sunday morning. You never know...

Koda is a dog that I am being paid to train in cadaver.
She is passing what would be her basic cadaver tests which is what the agreement was for so she is almost ready to go home, she has been here since last April when she came in as a 14 wk old puppy.
I am taking her back to her owner in May in South Carolina.
Land is anywhere from $375 an acre and up here. The closer you get to the Black Hills or civilization (big cities) it goes up A LOT.
And, Lee....no landrushes, but if there was I would let my Mals do it for me...
The family ranch is a little over 22000 acres I believe with leased and trust lands both.

Oh my gosh!
Maybe we will head there for retirement.
Out here, an acre will run $650,000 + undeveloped!
It is crazy!!!

Yeah, but it all evens out when you figure how much the gas will cost to drive from SD to the beach.

Ooops, got a little sidetracked.
As far as dog stuff, I like having the room to have my kennels, agility area, disaster pile (small) and the dogs can bark without the neighbors complaining. My dad is making me some bark boxes and some blinds, since my hope is to one day be able to have Mondio training here as well as some LE seminars too.
I hope to plant the grass for the field this year if Doug gets the time to do the dirt work for it.
Who knows...might even get Will out here to instruct so I can see Fetz and eat some gourmet cooking....
I want to be able to provide a variety for people who want to train centrally once in a while.
That way, if anyone has nipping and biting problems they can attend (I added this so it would stay on topic as well as dog stuff, I know, it's a stretch...hee hee )

Wow, sounds like you have quite the set up!
My 2 DVD's came in today - Establishing Pack Structure
and Basic Obedience.
I cant wait to watch them.
So much easier than reading a book, and the whole family
can watch and learn.
Have A Great Day,
Debbie

Debbie,
Those DVD's are great, I am re-watching the pack structure DVD now....
The other one that is really, REALLY helpful is the 8 Weeks to 8 Months video. Excellent puppy stuff on that one.

Debbie,
I want to commend you on what I think was the right decision for you, your family, and the pup.
The dog is in good hands now, your family isn't living in dread any longer, and you don't need to fear the shredding machine that a puppy can be. Everyone can move on.
Don't worry about the dog, it's very young yet, and at 11 or 12 weeks of age will adapt very quickly. Don't worry he's in good hands.
On the 'another' dog front though. Up to a point I agree with Mike A. (I think it was) who questioned even getting another puppy. All puppies are going to bite, chew, run around uncontrollably and cause all kind of havoc if not handled right, and even if handled right can be a hand full. That being said, I know you mentioned you had a trainer, but to put it bluntly, how did he/she help with the GSD? And why would you think it'll be different this time?
GSD's aren't for everyone, and the same goes for alot of breeds, but what they all share is a puppy's zest for life. Think about it.
Have you considered an older dog? There is alot to be said for a dog of a known disposition, training, exercise requirements, health, and is just dieing for a family to belong to and a home to lay his head in peace.
Again, kudos for doing the right thing.
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.
Randy
