I meet this guy once in awhile, he has a heinz variety of some sort. To watch her work is wow in the field. Not much to look at, but definitely wow in work.
He say's she's the best upland bird dog he's ever had. He's older than me.....That means old.
IMO, "Wow appeal" comes from a well trained dog. Breed doesn't matter and often the job or sport doesn't matter. Plenty of videos here featuring Mals with "Wow appeal" (read: well trained with the dog and handler working as a team making high level work look easy). Here are a few more videos with "wow appeal". It's not the breed, it's the team, the training and the dog.
