dear all, update on the DS litter, they have arrived 7 males, none of the females (not even sure how many females) will be placed to outsiders, but will be retained for assessment for breeding. in fact nearly all available dogs are being bought directly by security guards that work for the owner. this is not a condition of employment it is the employees own choice. the litter is a repeat mating (no experiments) as they are so happy with the results of the first litter and feel they have a good handle on what dogs they are getting.
only two are available to outside sale, i have already met the other purchaser that is getting a private sale, he is a full-time pro trainer and has a long history (decades in fact) working with police & millitary service dogs/handlers, training detection/narcotics dogs and training dogs for disabled people. he doesn't do any dog sports or does any breeding programs. he keeps 4 -7 dogs in his own kennel at a time mainly GSD's, 1 rott & beagles.
i have filed all the responses & advice people have offered and re-read them, got further advice etc.
the pro- trainer guy has also offered help and did a paid evaluation of my current skills with current dog. he repeated most everything what was said here re how serious this dog will be and what i need to do to stay in control. we are the same age and have a similar oulook on life and he is not the kind of guy to talk sh*t to people, i think he has taken me under his wing a bit re this project.
hopefully people here continue to offer advice even though i have clearly not taken it in regard to proceeding with this plan. if not thats OK too, you were all good enough to try to talk sense to a stranger.
so thats it, have training seminars booked, done miles of research, prep work and sorted out pro assistance.
in no time flat we have got down 13 pages on this thread which seems longer than many others (anyone know the stats on the average thread length).
i hope it continues - i might need you, but have some faith in the meantime.

Best of luck Peter. Hopefully we'll get to see a photo of these two dogs at some point!
When you get the new pup and start posting questings about him, I'd suggest starting a new thread. Folks who have not been involved in this topic to date will not realize there is now a new pup and will not be able to either post comments or learn from the info.

Dennis i just tried the 2x4 tactic. I don't think it works....damn it. haha I found myself reading this whole thread. Borderline crazy!!!! Lets hope when I go to pick out my next GSD I don't get one that is too hard for my newbie ass to handle. I don't feel like putting my wife, 1 year old son, and myself on the dinner menu!!!!

I've been on the dinner menu for too many Dutchies to ever want to own one. The sad part was most of the time I would get bit trying to redirect them off their handler. Gooooood luck to you Peter!! I hope you get to keep all your fingers to continue posting!! hopefully we'll get some pics one day.

Perhaps I should just start a new thread but I'm curious: There was a thread about discrimination from insurance companies about specific breeds of dogs, but it seems here as if there are comments about Dutchies as opposed to other breeds. Is there in fact a difference in breed specific behavior warranting the decisions by such companies?

No.
The insurance companies are doing it to limit their liabilities against idiots that don't properly handle the dogs (of whatever breed) they own.
I think if they could get away with it, they'd just blanket all dogs with higher rates or not cover them at all.

Peter if you have someone that is 'taking you under their wing' & training you, I would suggest that you follow his lead & not 'fish' here for other training advise. Which may be different or inconsistant with what he is teaching you.
If you train with someone that you trust then you shouldn't need to look for advise elsewhere. If you do, then you are not training with the person that you should be. Especially working with a dog that will be happy to have you served up for his diner. Good luck.
I will add that I know 2 people that are VERY skilled handlers & have been SERIOUSLY nailed by their own dutches.
