. . . I was hoping someone with a better mind than mine would tell me this article was flawed. . .
O.k., I'll take the bait - It's flawed!
Actually, I don't know this any more than you do. But, I did note this: it's a 1997 article that appeared in "Veterinary Clinical Nutrition" published by Veterinary Practice Publishing in Santa Barbara; they "accept unsolicited manuscripts." So, you write, they'll print it. References in the article go back to the '70s. Seems pretty outdated to me.
If I read the footnotes correctly, the authors are/were with the Science & Technology Center, Hill's Pet Nutrition, Topeka, KS
That's more revealing to me than any of their statements or conclusions.

Please look in both places -- the manufacturer as well as the brand name -- because not all foods are commonly known by the manufacturer's name.
I would scan the whole list if in doubt. I imagine that there are people, for example, who would look for Purina under "P" and not under "N" for Nestle. Alpo is under Nestle, Science Diet under Hill's, and so on.
For others: if you're using Firefox, i've found it's quickest just to push '/' (the key the question mark's on), then start typing the name of the brand of food you (or friends) feed, example i started searching for 'alpo'. so far still no dry foods being recalled by purina/alpo. *crosses fingers*

The cost is driven by the size of the dog.
A dog eats about 2-3% of his weight in raw food a day, so if you take 2.5% of the dog's weight and multiply that by the per-pound cost of whatever meats you'll be buying, there you go.
Add in the salmon oil. Produce is minimal.
Oops. Angelique (and others) will have estimates, too. :>
