Jenni, I've never fostered, but have rescued. So I'm curious, do you find yourself not wanting to create a bond with Stark since you're trying to prepare him for another home?
Do you mean ME not bonding w/Stark, or not letting HIM bond to me? I'm afraid he's going to have to bond to me, even though, ultimately, he'll be moving on. Without a bond, I don't really have any way to handle him; he's not cooperative at all. He has to learn to trust me if I am to get anything accomplished with him at all. He's not a friendly dog you can provide for, but not bond with, and rehome. He needs work. A lot of work. And, unless he bonds w/me, I'll never be able to get close enough to make any productive change. He is now letting me pet him and running into his run to be fed, which is huge progress. I think I'll try to leash him tonight.
He's just a guy whose life has been turned upside down at nearly 6 years of age. I can't say that my oldest male would be any easier in the same situation. I admire his spunk!
Every morning he's a little happier to see me, and I'm hoping tomorrow will be a big breakthrough day; I'm off all day and hope to get some productive time in w/him.
Very handsome boy!! Glad to hear he is doing well. Having fostered quite a few myself, you are absolutely correct in that Stark needs to bond with you in order to trust. I am sure you will make much progress. Keep us posted!!
I met Stark this past Friday. Jenni brought Stark over to my house and after meeting me and a couple of my dogs I think that Stark will make someone a very nice companion. He needs to be with the someone when he finds a home that has some GSD experience and he needs a chance to recover from the extreme turbulence that has occurred in his life. When he settles in he will be great! He was great with my dogs and he was great with me. He was quite nervous at first, but, once he calmed down he was okay. If I had to be afraid of someone I would be more more afraid of Jenni than Stark. She is a lot tougher than he is.(haha)
