I use the velco strips as baby collars Angela, pretty much for the reasons you posted. The last litter I whelped here was 10 and was so uniform in size and coloring that I would of been lost with them!
Every litter I have whelped have been collared as well. With those handy velcro strips that are sold for the purpose.
Angela, I too did the Super Puppy program on all of my litters as well as weighing then daily for a week, every other day for the next and twice a week until they were gone. It was very handy having a way to keep track of each. It was actually very interesting to see who developed how and how fast, as well as keeping track of each pups preferences and personalities.
I also took pictures around the same time I was weighing them, for both my self and the future owners.
Perhaps keeping track of only nine and differently marked pups at that, makes it easier, but thirteen Rotts all looking the same made it necessary to differentiate the pups in a meaningful way. But then I learned the hard way with my first litter.
I did not do any of it for future puppy owners, I did it for me and my sense of order... Maybe I am just too organized, as I still have a binder for each litter with each pup having their individual charts, colors, pictures and puppy owner information with updates that have come in.

This is what I did! My dogs were rescue dogs, but I didn't know what I was doing so I wanted to write everything down, lol. Also I wanted to keep the rescue updated. I kept track of everything, even though they are just pets. I found it so interesting even to look back on the notes I'd made the previous week to see how much they had changed.
Jenni - SQUEEEEEEE !!! I love puppy pics. I see what you mean about having a hard time getting them - she's tightly coiled around them! She looks like a great mom. Do you have some kind of "containment" for them? You will be finding puppies in the darndest places. Even with their eyes closed, they get everywhere! (of course, when they are big enough to climb out of their box, all bets are off!) I have some wonderful gray hairs from my litter, and I have a lot of respect for the careful breeders who do this on purpose, lol....
LOL! Angela, I took them out of the box for pics! They aren't free-roaming the basement! LMAO! I guess I shoulda mentioned that....
We used that opportunity to clean the box a bit, too. I took a few of them alone before she couldn't take a sit/stay anymore w/her babies across the room. When they are quiet, she's content. When they squeal, she is there in an instant and somehow knows exactly what they need.
They are remarkably fast for being blind. They can get to her in seconds flat.
I love their noises! I might not in a few weeks, for now, I think they are PRECIOUS!
Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone. I think they're outstanding, but I might be a tiny bit biased. Understatement, eh?
I thought it was wierd that you of all people had a mom and litter on a towel, LOL!!!! Wait until they get a bit older, photo sessions will be FUN (and involve the "sport" setting on your camera, lol)
Don't you just LOVE when they are nursing and their little heads bonk back and forth!!! They are wonderful pups. And Capri is beautiful too.
