TOUGH little buggers! I was just reading about a 13 pounder that killed a 34 pound badger. Yikes. Reminds me of the Jagterrier - the Patterdale is a little smaller in body only, sounds like.
Tammy - does your father do alot of training with his Patterdale? "Non-reactive" is for me after dealing with a neurotic mini-dachshund all these years.
Loved the phrase in the article I just read about the Patterdale: Do not allow this dog to develop "small dog syndrome." Reminds me of that other thread going on this forum.
A dog has alot of friends because he wags his tail instead of his mouth.

No he does not do alot of training. I actually thought this dog would be too much for him at his age. He had police dogs for most of his life, this is his first small dog, and I can honestly say that I think the dog could exel at any sport. He is not neurotic at all, trainers that meet him think he's awesome.
I am laughing at Lauren's video of the little Jack Russell, that's really how he is!

If he had police dogs, your father knows how to handle a dog, even if he doesn't do a lot of formal training. My bet is that "pack structure" is intact. It sounds like a pretty cool little dog. Not many little dogs are "non-reactive."

All the dogs I mentioned (and many that I didn't) compete in major sports of one sort or another Spenser.
And depending on the individual dog, they all are very handler oriented.
I'm not saying that there are any specific dogs that can't compete in sports. What I'm saying is that there are certain breeds that are unquestionably preferred for each sport. There is a reason why you see Mali's for the majority in bite sports, there is a reason why you see border collies in agility and flyball. I'm talking about big competitions with the best in their class. I don't want a Jack Russel who "can" be trained for ring sports, I want a GSD or Mali that is bred for it. You get the idea.
Also, I know there are exceptions to the rule, but as far as bite sports are concerned, its highly unlikely that you could pick a puppy outside of the protection breeds, that will have the proper temperament for ring sports or shutzhund.
Read the beginning of this thread. I'm not sure if I want to do bite sports or not yet. I'm still working it all out on which sports I want to focus on. That is one of the "pros" of a Mali over a BC. I think they are both super appealing and I really am having a hard time with it.
