frontline works good, more expensive than some others but BIOspot is very toxic, my cat reacts badly to it, i was not impressed with the tick effectness in it either. we got hit with ticks bad last nov and dec, which is unusual for maine, and frontline is good cause it kills ticks withen 24 hours, which prevents them from spreading their diseases. frontline is great on fleas too.
The active ingredient in top-spot Flea/Tick control is permethrin, this can be toxic to cats. I would not put any product on a cat that is intended for dog use. The percentages are quite different, and given that cats groom themselves frequently, it's a bad idea.

Interesting, I live in South Carolina, use nothing, and have not had any problems for several years ---- I wonder if it is because so many other people use stuff --- my cats got fleas but no dog fleas or ticks (and I brush/inspect daily and we "do" a lot of woods.....do feed BARF, though........
Now with all the recent rain, may have jinxed myself.
Since we are on the subject. I use Frontline, and I have a question. I live in Massachusetts which is heavily infested with fleas and N.A. Dog ticks, and my two dogs (APBT, AM-Bull) usually see the woods for 4-5 hours on the weekend. This includes being completely submerged in streams, taking mud baths, and generally just getting plain dirty.
Obviously they both need a bath after this, so they get one every Sunday. With the combination of all the stream and mud diving, and baths, how often should I apply the Frontline, I've been putting it on every two weeks, but it is getting to be pretty expensive. ($100.00 every 6 weeks).
Lyme disease is also a concern in this area, so I would like to be as carefull as possible.
I just ordered from an online company where I was able to get 12 doses of Frontline Plus for under $86 doses in the 44-85 lb range. I will post the link to it after I have received everything in good order. Any order over 50 gets free shipping.
I have been burned by online shopping before, so I will wait to spread the word, but it works out to be less than $8 a dose.
John,
I also have dogs that are in the water and bathed regularly. Just recently experimented to see how far I could push the Frontline applications (live in the tropics and have all the nasties in full force!) Just under two months was the limit.
Have always been happy with Frontline Plus, but am trying a new one my vet got in called Advantix.
Does all the same as Frontline Plus, but also repels mosquitos. We shall see....
If you don't have a lot a problems with fleas and ticks, maybe just a weekly bathing with Mycodex shampoo would suffice for you.
If you have a dog infested with fleas prior to using any such additive - give your dog a good bath using IVORY Liquid Soap - it will do you a hell of job killing the infestion of fleas. When I was first told this - I kinda chuckled at the older gentleman. But in the same sense, this older gentlemen had raised & trained hunting dogs all his life. I stopped chuckling after trying the use of it. Whenever any of my dogs get a bath - I use IVORY liquid soap. You'd be surprised and pleased with the results - honest.
