Skunks are one of the worst varmits a terrier man can run in to. If a dog gets sprayed underground,in close quarters, the dog can go into shock because of toxin buildup in their system. Most good baying terriers will avoid skunks but some hard core dogs will not learn. I have had coonhound men tell me they have had the same reaction with hounds that get direct hits up close. Treatment is to get them on iv asap.

Skunks and porcupines just never seem to create an aversion in some dogs just an increased "hate-on" for the little beggars. You would think that a few hours of a job with the needlenose pliers would make a dog reconsider a porcupine but nooo!

I know what you mean. My little mixed breed bitch got into it with a racoon once. You would think she would avoid them now, but not a chance. The experience only seems to have made her even bolder and more determined to kick raccoon ass.

I agree with tiggy2, any wildlife, I live in the swamps once inside the fenced area don't leave.
The Akita and GSD work together well on getting their prey. The Akita got Tapeworms from a stray cat a few weeks back. Always costing me money, wire from under my pick up had to be replaced.

Even my dog (standard poodle) has killed mice, treed a possom, tries for crows and pigeons and stalks and chases squirrels. He almost caught one once. He got close enough to pull off a tuft of hair from its tail (the evidence was in his mouth). He's also rolled in horse sh*t, dead birds and best of all a slimy, smelly, rotting salmon (boy was that car ride home fun! )

Many people dont realize the (standard) poodle was originaly a hunting dog. I think, working in prey, they could even do a pretty fair Sch routine. (I think the new guy just stuck his foot real deap). I come from a large,very doggy family and when we get together there might be my 3 terriers,a rot,2 pits, shep/chow, flat coated retriever,aussie,and standard poodle running together. They are very social with one another but my goofy terriers think they rule. The standard poodle deffinitly out thinks them all. As far as rolling in dead fish, thats the one thing I have to actually pull my dogs off of. they love it.

My friends corgi-terrier cross found some...err
"human-manure" while out on a walk and thoroughly
rolled and caked herself in THAT! It was a ride home with the car windows down and they had to draw straws to decide who got to bathe her!

On a more serious note - a lot of dogs end up on "death row"(the pound) because people get all wigged out because Lassie or RinTinTin does something unforgivably doggie and digs holes in the lawn or something. They'll just keep buying dogs and surendering them to the pound until they find one that won't chew or dig or bark .....Makes me MAD. I get several phone calls a year of people wanting me to take their untrained 18mo-3yr old unneutered male huskies that they have had chained in the backyard the whole time after the puppy glow wore off. It's always the same story - "we can't let him off the chain 'cause he runs away -he digs holes - he junps on the kids and the final staw is he jumped on the car and scratched it- he's so pretty -we saw the blue eyes and just had to have him-he pulls on the leash so he'd make a great sled dog- If you don't take hiim we'll have to put him down" I would like to choke these people,burn them to ashes and bury the ashes and then piddle on the spot where I buried the ashes. I wish people would realize that dogs are dogs and need to be trained and contained. Just had to vent- it
