I just want to keep those interested up to date.
Jet is still at the vet, he spent the weekend there, is temp is higher, 103.8 but no more blood in his stool, and the swelling is no better. There a major concerns he will loose his leg and they still dont know the cause of the swelling, a possiblility is a broken blood vessel. We are now at the mercy of the vets to solve this and solve it quickly. I will post an update if anything changes, thanks again for those who have helped.

Brian, how awful. If they don't have any idea what's causing it, is there someone else near you who does? That's so scary that they STILL don't know what's causing it. Are you sure it couldn't be a reaction to some sort of insect bite? There are absolutely awful stories about bites causing similar symptoms, high fevers, swelling, blood, etc. I'm sure you're doing everything you can; it's just horrible to hear and you can't help but feel there must be *something* that can be done. Have you asked the breeder if she's encountered anything similar or has any suggestions or ideas? I'll be praying for you guys.

Jet has been transfered to an emergency clinic where he can be treaded more throughly.
I've been lucky and have never had to deal with a situation like this before that required emergency/specialized care and my ignorance is showing. When we get through this (good or bad) I plan on posting a new thread that describes the events, my decisions at the time and what I now consider the correct decisions that should have been made. I hope I am the lone ignorant owner in dealing with emergency care, but in case I'm not I think it will be helpful to others that may have to address emergency care in the future.
I am not a trainer and do not have the experience that most on this site do, so anything I can do to contribute is the least I can do for the help I have received. Thanks again for your support.

That's good that Jet is in good hands.
You're NOT alone, not by a long shot. I will guess that almost all of us with any years' worth of experience have faced emergency vet situations. We do what we know to do. As we know better, we do better, and the sharing of experiences is a big part of what lets us know better.
Hang in there. Good luck.

I hope your dog Jet will be back to normal health very soon. Emergency Vets can do wonders. Thanks for sharing your story and I hope to read some better news about Jet soon.

I have had a few inquiries so I wanted to let everyone interested in Jet's progress know what's going on. He has been at the emergency clinic since Monday, his white blood cell count is down from 60000 to 12000, the swelling is slightly better but not good enough and his temp is down to 103.1. Today they operated on the leg to drain as much unwanted fluid as possible, in fact he is being operated on as I write this so I do not know his status.
One positive is that when I visit him each day he is becoming more active and I am able to hand feed him, so that is very encouraging.
I have to thank all of you who have expressed your consern and I will report back when he shows some progress.

Brian,
I hope he comes out ok.
I wish they could give you an accurate diagnosis to what caused it, this sounds like one tough case to crack!
Again, here's wishing for the best with your boy!

Brian, my prayers are with you and Jet. You said he ran into a bench? Was it wooden? Check to see if there are any slivers missing. Wood will not come up on an X-ray.
Had a similar experience and it was passed off as a cruciate injury and prescribed the usual Rimidyl. After a few swims in the ocean (walking was too painful for the little guy) I felt a sharp point sticking out of his hind leg. It took pliers to pull out this 1 3/4 inch long splinter (small end first) out of my dogs leg. It came from a palm in the yard that has these long spines on it.
This splinter migrated across his leg.
Search for an entry point, no matter how miniscule. It may be healed by now. Bring this to your vet's attention.
I took a chainsaw to that palm.
Good Luck and wishing the best.

hi Brian:
When my Boxer was 4 months old, he was running around, got on the pond, which was frozen, and fell through the ice, and I waded in to get him. A few days later, he was in his crate, and his whole hind leg was twice the size of the other. His hock was mostly affected. Brought my baby (yes, I am not ashamed to call him that <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> into the vet that did his ear crop, because they are a well respected emergency and teaching vet hospital. He was in the ICU for the weekend, and they diagnosed septic arthritis. Basically an infection in his hock. They put him on massive abx, and they wanted to go into the joint- but I held off on that because you can easily introduce MORE bacteria when you open a joint capsule. He was there for a few days and came home with more meds and got better. It sounds to me like your boy's splinter may have created lots of problems. I was told that a very small cut can cause this. I wish your boy health and am thinking of you.

Here's another update: the surgery yesterday went well, they found two large pockets of puss and drained them. His temp is lower today and he is eating on his own. They are letting us take him home tonight and we are very excited and feel we may be out of the woods.
There was a question about splinters or something like that may have gotten into his leg from the collision, but the ER shaved his leg and found nothing, they even looked for spider bites. They still dont know where the infection came from and we may never know, but the delay in getting him on antibotics, about 5 days, did not help.
I plan on doing my critique of the situation and myself this weekend to hopefully help others how may end up in a similar situation. I will also post a couple pictures of him and his leg.
