Sounds like your dog(s) could certainly benefit from some snake proofing
Indeed they would! But on the other hand (story time!), last summer they went to barking on the front porch directly outside the front door. Not wanting to open the door for fear of what was out there I opened the window, pushed the screen out and peeked out to see a big copperhead curled up right where I would have stepped had I gone out. Once my dogs noticed me there they went into attack mode on the snake. Can't help but wonder if I took them for snake proofing if they'd just leave the snake there for me to step on next time??
BTW-every time they have gotten bitten it has been on the face/neck area. They have all pulled through each time...with the moccassin bite being the worst so far.
Not sure if this will work or not but will try anyways. Click on the link below and hopefully it'll take you to a pict. of Jax's scar a week after he was bitten by the water moccassin. The scar is now unnoticable thank goodness.
Yes, what a handsome boy! Tbm, were those Benadryl tablets the 25mg tablets? 4mg/lb, for my dog would be 320mg. There's a huge difference between 50mg and 320mg!!!! I hope I didn't get bad info?????
It's the 25mg tabs. I give 2 to my adult dogs when need be and one to Jax who was 5 months old at the time of his bite....all get the dosage every 4-ish hours until the swelling goes down.
Thanks for the compliments. He's a Leerburg grandpup...and my pride and joy at that!
Hmmmm, well I am certain that the dosage that I was told by a vet was 4mg per lb of body weight. That is a huge discrepancy. I'm going to double check on that. When I find out, I'll post the info here. I wouldn't want anyone to be over or under dosing their dogs.
OK, I've done some poking around on the net, and I'm still seeing conflicting info, so I emailed the guy who gave the class that I attended. I'll let you know what he says.
In relation to allegies - not snake bites, my book "The Dog's Drugstore - The Dog Owner's Guide to Nonprescription Drugs and Their Safe Use in Veterinary Home Care" by Richard Redding DVM and Myrna Papurt DVM, suggests:
Benadryl - 25 to 50 mg every 8 hours, 1 or 2 tablets.
