I recently took my pet male for an obedience class. The trainer suggested no treats, put prongs on pups, and ran around with a spray bottle.
I told her my reasons for being in the class, told her I use treats for rewards, and casually mentioned that I was the only one that would correct my dog.
I was careful not to step on her toes and when another student in the class longingly looked at my treats or ball I told them the trainer and I had decided that my boy was a "special" case. I was also very careful to refer any questions back to her.
My point being if you are fairly confident in your training methods you can use classes that don't teach quite the way you do, especially if you are upfront with the instructor.
My boy didn't need a basic ob class, he did need to be around a group of people and dogs in a controlled enviroment. I also felt that he needed some time with me away from the other pooches. Or maybe it was me that needed it!

Yeah Betty -I found that too in my class the trainer wanted everyone to swap dogs and make them do a command for total strangers and then once they'd done it (with a treat lure) to swap again. Some of the pups were really getting stressed about where their owners were. I suddenly needed the loo for this part!

Why would you want your dog to listen to a stranger?? I can just imagine giving Princess Weasel's or Pepper's leash to a complete stranger..........

It makes me sad to hear all the weird stuff people think makes sense in dog training.

Reiner,
We're talking for the most part about *beginner* handler's here - they're not "75% of the "equation", the quality of the instruction they recieve is.
I'm sorry, you're the one that talking about a reality check here, but it doesn't sound like you're very familar with what goes on in many obedience classes.

As a PS, I'm assuming we're talking about a normal, motivated student.
If the instructor and the instruction received doesn't really matter ( as Reiner seems to indicate is true ), I guess I could sign up with an inept baseball instructor and learn to bat them out of the stadium all day long.
Somehow, I don't see that happening.
However, if I sign up for a baseball camp run by motivated professional's, I'd certainly achieve a lot more than from the poor instructor's.
Whoa! Maybe the quality of instruction makes a difference!
*sigh*...why am I even discussing this? This is arguing common sense. I only make these type of posts in fear that new people are going to read a post and believe something that goes against common sense.

LOL @ Will!
Your right to post as I though he was being a bit too serious . I do think he misses the point I was trying to make which was basically the quality of instruction on offer is NOT what I expected to find in an advertised dog training class.
In addition there are a lot of people at these classes who depend on the "trainers" to show/teach them how to handle their dog, as they don't have the necessary smarts to go learn for themselves or to study the basics and get guidance. That's not meant as a slur but more of a fact of life that a lot of people lack the motivation ot "do better".
Man now I'm getting caught up in this. I just wanted to have a moan

For what it is worth, I trained my young GSD at home, by myself, using methods similar to Ed's, and he is very well trained compared to the many other dogs in my neighborhood who went to puppy classes, or were trained by private trainers. I learned from books, from what I learned as a kid training our family pets, common sense, and my own feelings about what kind of relationship I wanted with my dog. When I found this site, I found that I was pretty much on the right track, but I learned a lot, amended some things, and added others. Now we are working on training under ball distraction. I don't feel that I have missed a thing by not attending organized classes. If I were training the dog for an organized sport or as a working dog, we would both need formal instruction, since I am a complete novice. I must also say that I would never allow a stranger to handle my dog. I do not want him to listen to anyone outside the family in that way.
For a dog with "special needs", such as my older dominant dog, I made a lot of mistakes, and there professional help would have made a big difference. I was completely unprepared for that dog. But, whose classes? Whose lead would I follow? Most people would have abandoned her or euthanized her. Most trainers in this area ONLY use halties, clickers and treats. Again, this site, both Ed and it's members, has given me better guidance then I have gotten anywhere else, including a neighbor who is a dog behaviorist (her dog is untrained, IMO). So far, at least, I find my money and time is better spent here, and in active training of the dog at home.
